The American University field hockey team tallied back-to-back goals in the second half after facing a 1-0 deficit to register its first home win of the season over Monmouth, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon.

"Today what I really like is our resiliency, we were in a little bit of a tight spot having to come from behind," said Head Coach Steve Jennings. "I think the team showed a lot of heart and I was really happy we were able to get it done. It wasn't always the prettiest all the time but at the end of the day what's most important was that we were able to stick together and come through with a win."

Monmouth (2-10) had a chance in the first six minutes of play on a penalty corner, but Alex Carroll's shot was saved by Stephanie Burry. The Hawks were able to capitalize in the 25th minute, when Jill Vogl had a breakaway down the left side of the field. She passed it off to Chelsea Mann in front of the net, who put it right back to Vogl to give Monmouth the 1-0 lead.

American (4-7, 0-1) tried to respond four minutes later on a penalty corner but Rebecca Treharne's attempt was blocked in front of the cage. The Hawks tried to add another in the 31st minute but Carroll's shot was pushed aside by Burry to keep the Eagles down by one at the end of the first half.

The Eagles notched the equalizer in the 52nd minute on a penalty corner. Gina Hofmann had the goal for American as Julie Fosseprez and Kati Rothenhoefer registered the assists. American took the lead in the 60th minute, when Shelly Montgomery trapped it in the center of the circle and was able to turn and send it past Teresa Mathews for the 2-1 advantage.

Monmouth had an opportunity to tie the match in the closing minute, but Burry was able to come up with the save for the Eagles' victory.

American had a 13-7 advantage in shots in the game while the Hawks owned a 5-4 edge in shots on goal. The Eagles also had a 11-4 advantage in penalty corners. Burry notched four saves in goal for American.

The Eagles will head out on the road next weekend to continue its Patriot League season. American will face Lehigh on Saturday, October 6 at 11 a.m. before taking on No. 3 Princeton on Sunday, October 7 at 1 p.m. for a non-conference match-up.
