Swimming and Diving Opens Season with Win at Potomac Relays

The American University swimming and diving team kicked off its 2012-13 season Friday afternoon in the Potomac Relay Invitational at the Reeves Aquatic Center. The men's team won the event while the women's came in second, which gave the Eagles a first-place combined result in the relay and diving competition.

The men's team recorded three victories in the relays. The highlight of the afternoon was the victorious men's 300 back relay team of Matt Wurm, Bobby Ballance and Harrison Volaski, which broke the meet record with its time of 2:35.98. The record had stood at 2:36.38, set by the Eagles in 2005.

The men's team also recorded a victory in the 300 breast relay as Charlie Taffet, Dan Francis and Kevin Bond won the race with a time of 3:04.03. The 400 medley relay picked up a victory with Ballance, Ross Honig, Dylan Rasnick and Tyler Pham beating out the field with a time of 3:39.21.

On the women's side, American's best results were a pair of third place finishes. The 300 fly relay team of Shekinah Hoffman, Grace Ibrahim and Alexandra Follman combined to record a time of 3:07.69 while Ibrahim, Follman and Celeste Borras had a time of 3:31.34 in the 300 breast relay.

The Eagles also recorded top finishes in the diving portion of the competition. Kegan Gerard won the men's 1-meter dive with a mark of 168.30 and also won the 3-meter dive with a score of 129.02. Melissa Parker won the women's 3-meter diving event, recording a final score of 198.82.

American unofficially took the overall title with 745 points while George Mason and George Washington finished second and third, respectively. Georgetown earned the victory in the women's competition while American led the field with 386 points on the men's side.

The Eagles will return to the Reeves Aquatic Center on Friday, October 12 and Saturday, October 13 in a tri-meet against Catholic and George Washington.
