Field Hockey Drops 3-2 Contest to Quinnipiac

The American University field hockey team could not overcome a two-goal halftime deficit as they fell to Quinnipiac, 3-2, on Sunday.

American (4-6) went down a goal eight minutes in off a Bobcat penalty corner. Kristin Engelke scored when Cate Colucci picked up a rebound in front of the Eagles' goal. Colucci passed it to Engelke who was able to put the ball past Ashley Dalisera for the 1-0 lead.

The Eagles tied the game at one apiece in the 14th minute. Gina Hofmann's shot off a penalty corner was saved by Quinnipiac goalkeeper Nicole Lewis, but Shelly Montgomery collected the rebound and put it in the back of the cage for the junior's fourth goal of the season.

Quinnipiac (5-4) tested Dalisera late in the half as the Bobcats outshot the Eagles by an 8-5 margin, including scoring back-to-back goals before halftime to take a 3-1 lead. Danielle Allan scored when she fired a shot on goal to give Quinnipiac a lead and then Jess Rusin scored off another penalty corner with just under two minutes to play in the half.

Keelin Winslow scored her third career goal for American at the 61:59 mark when she redirected a shot by Hofmann, sliding the ball into the back of the cage to cut the score to 3-2.

American attempted to find the equalizer, but could not put a shot in the goal. Lewis made five saves in the game, including a pair of shots off penalty corners by American with no time on the clock in regulation for the 3-2 win.

The Eagles outshot the Bobcats 12-11 and held a 9-6 advantage in penalty corners.

American will return to action next Saturday, September 29 to open Patriot League play against No. 18 Lafayette at 12 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on Eagles Vision TV and will mark the annual "Phil Jacobs" event.
