The American University women's soccer team held Richmond
scoreless in the second half of Saturday night's game, but couldn't
overcome a 2-0 first half deficit as they fell to the Spiders.
"Richmond took advantage of their chances and Becca Wann is a
special player," said Head Coach Dave Bucciero. "I am happy with the
way we played on both sides of the ball and we are a better team
today than three weeks ago. Our total focus now has to be on
conference play and a new season that starts tomorrow."
Wann tallied both goals for Richmond (4-5-0) just four and a
half minutes apart in the first half. Her first came off a cross
from Violet Miller while Ashley Williams added the assist on the
second off a deflection on a corner in the 17th minute.
American (2-7-2) was able to hold the Spiders scoreless after
the break, with Charlene
Belanger coming up with six saves in the second half.
The Eagles had two opportunities in the 57th minute but both
Jasmine
Mohandesi and Kirsten
Eriksen's shots were blocked in front of the net.
American had two more opportunities in the final 15 minutes of
play, but Andrea Young saved both Brenna
Smith and Michaela
Cowgill's attempts.
The Spiders held a 21-6 advantage in shots in the game, with a
10-2 margin in shots on goal. Belanger notched eight saves in goal
for the Eagles.
American will kick off Patriot League play on Friday, September
28 when it travels to Annapolis, Md. to take on Navy at 7 p.m.
