Box Score The American University field hockey team came back from a three-goal deficit against No. 19 Michigan State, but couldn't get the equalizer in the closing minutes as it fell, 3-2, on Friday night at the MSU Invitational.
Michigan State (4-3) took a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute when Heather Howie scored off a penalty corner, slipping it past Ashley Dalisera. The Eagles outshot Michigan State by a 7-6 advantage in the first half, but were unable to tie the game.
The Spartans added two more to open the second half with Abby Barker and Howie finding the back of the cage for the 3-0 lead.
American (2-5) was able to cut its deficit in the 43rd minute when Shelly Montgomery tallied her second goal of the year to make it a 3-1 game. The Eagles continued to fight and were able to make it a one-goal game in the 67th minute. Keelin Winslow scored off a penalty corner with Montgomery coming up with the assist.
The Eagles tried to get the equalizing goal to send the game to overtime in the final minutes, but goalkeeper Molly Cassidy and the Spartans' defense came up with the stops to preserve the 3-2 victory.
American held a 17-10 advantage in shots in the game, registering eight shots on goal. Dalisera registered three saves for the Eagles.
American continues play in the MSU Invitational on Sunday, September 16 when it takes on Central Michigan at 11 a.m. in the consolation match. The Chippewas fell to Louisville, 3-2, in double-overtime on Friday afternoon. This will be the first-ever meeting between the two teams.
