#25 Field Hockey Can't Overcome Early Deficit against #3 Old Dominion; Watch Highlights

Box Score

The American University field hockey team fell to #3 Old Dominion, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon despite a career-high nine saves from goalkeeper Ashley Dalisera.

"I think today we took a couple huge steps forward," said Head Coach Steve Jennings. "Old Dominion's a great team and I think that we played much more on the front foot than we did against Richmond…We certainly aren't happy that we lost today but I think that we competed in a much more AU-traditional style and I think that we take a lot of confidence from that and keep improving."

Old Dominion (1-1) found the back of the net first off a penalty corner two minutes into the game. The Eagles were able to respond on their first penalty corner of the day as well at the 3:30 mark. Keelin Winslow tapped it in off the feed from Gina Hofmann to score her first collegiate goal and tie the game at one.

Rosario Villagra scored what would be the game-winning goal in the 12th minute, slipping it past Dalisera to give Old Dominion the 2-1 lead.

American (0-2) continued to defend well against the Monarch defense as they rattled off 10 shots in the second half. The Eagles had an opportunity to equalize in the 51st minute, but Shelly Montgomery's shot was blocked inside the circle.

Old Dominion outshot the Eagles 20-4 in the game and held the 11-4 advantage in penalty corners.

American will return to Jacobs Field next Friday, August 31 when they host #15 Ohio State at 3 p.m. The game will mark the return of former American Head Coach Anne Wilkinson, the current coach of the Buckeyes. Coach Wilkinson and her former players will be honored with a special pre-game and half time ceremony.

Friday's contest will be broadcast live on Eagles Vision TV.
