Box Score

The American University field hockey team struck first in Saturday's Patriot League Championship game, but it couldn't overcome No. 12 Lafayette as it fell in heartbreaking fashion, 2-1, on a penalty stroke goal in overtime.

"We are very heartbroken to have had our season end without the title of champion, but congratulate Lafayette on a great game and a deserved victory," said Head Coach Steve Jennings. "We also give thanks to an outstanding leader, player and person in our lone senior Gina Hofmann. Gina will be missed tremendously and gave us so many special memories on and off the field."

American (10-10) struck first in the closing seconds of the first half. The Eagles were awarded a penalty corner in the 35th minute. Kati Rothenhoefer inserted the corner and sent it to Julie Fosseprez. Fosseprez trapped the ball at the top of the circle where Hofmann ripped a shot into the back of the net to send American into the intermission with a 1-0 lead.

Lafayette (17-1) held a 4-2 advantage in shots in the first half, also notching a 4-2 edge in penalty corners.

The Leopards had a penalty corner 15 minutes into the second half, but Jenna Seybert's attempt hit the post and Haley Keenan's shot off the rebound went wide. Lafayette added the equalizer in the 52nd minute when Deanna DiCroce had a breakaway down the center of the field and was able to beat Ashley Dalisera for the 1-1 draw.

The Leopards registered five shots in the second half, holding the Eagles without an attempt, but were unable to convert as the match went to overtime.

Rebecca Treharne tallied her first shot of the day with a backhanded shot inside the circle to open extra time, but goalkeeper Jessica Deutsch kicked it away to preserve the tie.

With a minute remaining in the overtime period, Emily Valeo was fouled inside the circle and Lafayette was awarded a penalty stroke. DiCroce was able to convert on the shot, sending it to the upper left corner of the cage past Dalisera to give the Leopards their second consecutive Patriot League title.

Lafayette held an 11-3 advantage in shots with a 6-3 edge in shots on goal and a 11-2 mark in penalty corners. Dalisera posted four saves as the starting goalkeeper.

Following the match, Jaclyn Anspach, Hofmann and Shelly Montgomery were named to the All-Tournament Team.
