Box Score The American University field hockey team struck first in
Saturday's Patriot League Championship game, but it couldn't
overcome No. 12 Lafayette as it fell in heartbreaking fashion, 2-1,
on a penalty stroke goal in overtime.
"We are very heartbroken to have had our season end without the
title of champion, but congratulate Lafayette on a great game and a
deserved victory," said Head Coach Steve Jennings. "We also give thanks
to an outstanding leader, player and person in our lone senior
Gina
Hofmann. Gina will be missed tremendously and gave us
so many special memories on and off the field."
American (10-10) struck first in the closing seconds of the
first half. The Eagles were awarded a penalty corner in the 35th
minute. Kati
Rothenhoefer inserted the corner and sent it to
Julie
Fosseprez. Fosseprez trapped the ball at the top of
the circle where Hofmann ripped a shot into the back of the net to
send American into the intermission with a 1-0 lead.
Lafayette (17-1) held a 4-2 advantage in shots in the first
half, also notching a 4-2 edge in penalty corners.
The Leopards had a penalty corner 15 minutes into the second
half, but Jenna Seybert's attempt hit the post and Haley Keenan's
shot off the rebound went wide. Lafayette added the equalizer in
the 52nd minute when Deanna DiCroce had a breakaway down the center
of the field and was able to beat Ashley
Dalisera for the 1-1 draw.
The Leopards registered five shots in the second half, holding
the Eagles without an attempt, but were unable to convert as the
match went to overtime.
Rebecca
Treharne tallied her first shot of the day with a
backhanded shot inside the circle to open extra time, but
goalkeeper Jessica Deutsch kicked it away to preserve the tie.
With a minute remaining in the overtime period, Emily Valeo was
fouled inside the circle and Lafayette was awarded a penalty
stroke. DiCroce was able to convert on the shot, sending it to the
upper left corner of the cage past Dalisera to give the Leopards
their second consecutive Patriot League title.
Lafayette held an 11-3 advantage in shots with a 6-3 edge in
shots on goal and a 11-2 mark in penalty corners. Dalisera posted
four saves as the starting goalkeeper.
Following the match, Jaclyn
Anspach, Hofmann and Shelly
Montgomery were named to the All-Tournament Team.
