The American University women's soccer team tallied its second
consecutive shutout with a 3-0 win over Lafayette on Sunday
afternoon as it earned its second straight Patriot League
victory.
"I thought they were great today and I thought that was one of
the most complete performances we've put on in awhile," said Head
Coach Dave Bucciero. "I'm really happy with the way
they played in a lot of different areas. I have nothing but
positive things to say about this team, and winning 3-0 today
against a good Lafayette side says something about our team."
American (4-8-2, 2-1-0) took the lead in the eighth minute.
Erin
Mulhern played the ball through to Michelle
Montilio in front of the net. Montilio drove to the
right and was able to beat the Lafayette goalkeeper, scoring an
easy goal for the 1-0 advantage. The senior looked to add a second
in the 15th minute, but the header was saved by Lauren Smedley.
Lafayette (4-8-2, 1-2-0) tried to get the equalizer in the 41st
minute, but Charlene
Belanger was able to stop Allison Stone's attempt to
keep the Eagles up by one.
American had a pair of opportunities to open the second half,
but both Mulhern and Nicole
Paviglionite's attempts were blocked by the Leopards
defense. The Eagles were able to notch their second goal of the day
in the 65th minute when Michaela
Cowgill received a cross from Sam
Trotta and was able to head it in for the 2-0
lead.
Lafayette nearly added a goal in the 76th minute. Jaclyn
Giordano's shot hit the top crossbar and bounced straight down just
outside the goal line. The Eagles were able to clear the ball and
prevent the Leopards' from erasing the deficit.
American registered its third of the match in the 86th minute.
Carleigh
Morba sent in a shot that was saved by Smedley. After
the initial save, the keeper fumbled the ball and Kristin
Piorun was there to put it into the net for the 3-0
victory.
The Eagles held an 18-5 advantage in the game with an 8-2 margin
in corner kicks. Belanger posted two saves to earn her second
consecutive shutout.
"We're 2-1 right now and we're in a good spot," said Bucciero.
"We've got to get ready to play a very talented Bucknell team but
we set a goal of winning at home and we've done that in our first
two games and its fantastic."
American will take on Bucknell on Saturday, October 13 at 1 p.m.
as it looks to make it three straight. The Eagles return to Reeves
Field on Saturday, October 27 at 1 p.m. against Colgate.
