Box Score The American University field hockey team held No. 4 Princeton
scoreless through the first half of play in Sunday afternoon's
contest before falling, 2-0, to the Tigers.
Princeton (10-1, 3-0 Ivy) challenged the American defense early,
earning a penalty corner in the first three minutes of the match.
Kathleen Sharkey took the shot and Ashley
Dalisera was able to come up with the save. The Tigers
had two more penalty corners but both shots were off-target.
American (5-8, 1-1) registered its first shot of the game in the
25th minute. Kati
Rothenhoefer had an opportunity but Princeton
goalkeeper Christina Maida made the save to keep the match
scoreless.
The Tigers held a 9-1 advantage in shots in the first period,
with an 8-0 margin in penalty corners.
Princeton came out of the break with a goal in the 41st minute
to take the 1-0 lead. Allison Evans recorded her fifth goal of the
season after Dalisera came up with a save on Teresa Benvenuti's
initial attempt.
The Eagles earned a penalty corner in the 45th minute but
Shelly
Montgomery's shot went just wide of the net to keep
Princeton up 1-0.
Princeton added its second goal of the game in the 59th minute
when Kathleen Sharkey received a feed from Evans at the top of the
circle. Sharkey took the shot and was able to put it in the left
corner of the net.
The Tigers held a 22-2 advantage in shots in the match and a
10-1 advantage in shots on goal. Princeton also owned a 15-2 margin
in penalty corners. Dalisera recorded eight saves for American.
American returns to Jacobs Field next weekend for a pair of
matches, including a Patriot League contest against Holy Cross on
Saturday, October 13 at 11 a.m. The Eagles then host Towson on
Sunday, October 14 at 1 p.m.
