Box Score The American University field hockey team scored a season-high nine goals against the Lehigh Mountain Hawks to pick up a 9-2 victory and its first Patriot League win Saturday in Bethlehem, Pa. Five different players scored, including Jaclyn Anspach who tallied her first career hat trick.
American (5-7, 1-1) and Anspach scored the first goal in the 25th minute off of a penalty corner. The junior fired two initial shots which were saved by Lehigh goalkeeper Sydney Maltinsky but was able to convert the first goal off the rebound.
After Gina Hofmann blocked two Mountain Hawk attempts, the Eagles went back on the attack with a pair of goals right before halftime. Canon Hirschler scored her first goal of the season, finishing the play after her first two shots off the penalty corner were blocked, and Alex McMackin scored the Eagles third goal of the half just 1:13 after Hirschler's unleashing a shot just inside the circle to put American up 3-0 at halftime.
American held a 9-3 advantage in shots and 5-2 on penalty corners at the intermission.
Two and a half minutes into the second period, Shelly Montgomery scored her second goal in as many games when she was able to maneuver her way through the Lehigh (3-10, 0-2) defense and beat Maltinsky.
Rebecca Treharne added the fifth goal of the game; the sophomore's first of the season, before Lehigh finally got on the board. After a Mountain Hawk timeout, Emily Torcivia slipped the ball past Ashley Dalisera off of a Lehigh penalty corner. Hofmann added a tally of her own, scoring off a direct shot from one of American's seven penalty corners in the second half.
Montgomery added another score when she tipped in a pass from Hofmann four minutes later in the 47th minute before Anspach scored back-to-back goals to record the hat trick.
Lehigh scored with 2:27 remaining as Erin Ricker scored off of a Kimberly Eng pass from the side to make the final score 9-2.
The last time American hit the nine-goal mark was a 9-0 victory at Lehigh in 2010. The Eagles recorded 27 shots to Lehigh's 10 and held a 12-7 penalty corner advantage. Dalisera and Stephanie Burry combined to make four saves.
The Eagles return to action tomorrow when they travel to take on No. 4 Princeton on Sunday at 1 p.m.
