Montgomery registered both goals for the American
University field hockey team as it posted its second shutout of the
season, defeating Holy Cross, 2-0, on Saturday afternoon.
American (6-8, 2-1) challenged the Crusaders defense early.
Alex
McMackin sent a shot in just under two minutes into
the game, but goalkeeper Kat Matchett was able to come up with the
save. The Eagles were awarded a penalty corner with Rebecca
Treharne's shot hitting the post.
American continued to dominate possession and was able to tally
its first goal in the 20th minute. Julie
Fosseprez crossed the ball in front of the net to
Montgomery, who was able to slip it into the left corner of the
cage for the 1-0 advantage.
Holy Cross (2-10, 1-2) had its first opportunity in the 24th
minute on a penalty corner. Jillian Caffrey took the shot with
Ashley
Dalisera notching the save for the Eagles.
Montgomery found the back of the net again in the 40th minute.
Her first shot on the penalty corner hit the top crossbar. She was
able to get the rebound and put it back to give American a 2-0
lead. The Eagles continued to pressure the Holy Cross defense
through the end of the game but the Crusaders were able to come up
with the stops to prevent another score.
American held a 22-2 advantage in shots in the game with a 14-1
margin in shots on goal. The Eagles also had a 6-1 edge in penalty
corners. Dalisera notched one save as the starting goalkeeper for
her second shutout of the year.
The Eagles will return to Jacobs Field tomorrow, Sunday, October
14 when they host Towson at 1 p.m.
