Men's Basketball Falls at Lehigh, 71-60

The American University men's basketball team fell to Lehigh on the road, 71-60, on Wednesday night despite a 22-point effort from Charles Hinkle.

Hinkle recorded his 11th 20-point effort of the season on 8-of-18 from the field, including 5-of-10 from three-point range. Blake Jolivette and Riley Grafft also scored in double-digits for the Eagles with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Four players recorded five rebounds in the game while Tony Wroblicky had a team-high three blocks and John Schoof notched a career-high five assists.

American (10-7, 1-1) took the early lead on a four-point play from Hinkle. The senior put the Eagles up on a put-back of his own miss then drained a three for the 17-12 lead. C.J. McCollum's three-point play brought the Mountain Hawks within one, 21-20, with 6:35 to play.

Lehigh (13-5, 1-1) took its first lead off a pair of McCollum free throws before Grafft was able to answer with a lay-up. Daniel Munoz added a bucket off a Grafft dish for the 25-22 lead at 3:15. A jumper from Stefan Cvrkalj after an American turnover brought it back to a one-point game, 26-25. Gabe Knutson came up with a steal on the Eagles' final possession of the half and scored to give the Mountain Hawks a 30-28 advantage at the break.

The Eagles shot 40.7 percent from the field and 45.5 percent from three-point range as Hinkle notched a team-high 15 points. Lehigh was 33.3 percent from the field and 30.0 percent from beyond the arc. McCollum led the Mountain Hawks with 12 points in the first half.

Lehigh's Jordan Hamilton and John Adams drained back-to-back three's for the 48-41 lead with 12:30 left in the game. Wroblicky ended a three-minute scoring drought for the Eagles and Jolivette added a three to cut Lehigh's lead to 50-46 with 9:54 to play.

The Mountain Hawks took their first double-digit lead of the game, 56-46, on an Adams three-pointer. Lehigh led by as many as 16 and walked away with the 71-60 win.

"Lehigh really got it going there during that stretch in the second half. They were getting some pretty good looks," said Head Coach Jeff Jones following the game. "I think inconsistency has plagued us all season and we didn't have guys step up."

American shot 40.7 percent from the field in the game and 37.0 percent from beyond the arc. Lehigh shot 38.3 percent from the field and 47.6 percent from three-point range. McCollum led all scorers with 26 points while Holden Greiner grabbed nine boards to lead both teams.
