Women's Soccer Plays Iowa Tough, Falls Late; Watch Highlights

Box Score

Samantha Trotta scored her second goal in as many matches to draw the American University women's soccer team even with Iowa in the second half, but the Hawkeyes responded with two late goals to record a 3-1 victory Sunday afternoon at Reeves Field.

"I was really happy with our team's performance today," Head Coach Dave Bucciero said. "Nobody likes to lose but obviously Iowa is a really good team and they proved that today. One of our goals today was to be consistent for 90 minutes and I thought we did that."

Iowa (5-0) registered the match's opening goal in the 40th minute when Dana Dalrymple received a long pass down the right side from Morgan Showalter. AU goalkeeper Arianna Efstathiou came out to try to contest the play, but Dalrymple was able to navigate around Efstathiou and find the back of the net for the 1-0 Hawkeye advantage.

After facing a one-goal deficit at halftime, American (2-4) seemed to come out of intermission with a renewed sense of energy. The Eagles were able to capitalize on their increased chances and tie the match in the 52nd minute when Jasmine Mohandesi fed Trotta on the right side. Trotta did the rest, sliding a high shot into the back-left corner of the net from 20 yards out to level the match at one.

But Iowa proved to be too much down the stretch, registering the game-winning score in the 75th minute when Katie Nasenbenny received a cross from Cloe Lacasse and put her shot past Efstathiou. The Hawkeyes added an insurance tally less than 10 minutes later when Lacasse drove up the middle of the AU defense and slid her shot into the lower-left corner of the goal.

Iowa held a 20-4 advantage in shots along with a 7-1 margin in corner kicks. Aside from Trotta's goal, Mohandesi, Lindsay Muri and Erin Mulhern each recorded a shot for the Eagles.

The Eagles will look to regroup for their next contest, which will take place this Wednesday, September 7 at No. 3 Maryland. First kick from College Park is scheduled for 7 p.m.
