Box Score
Seth Goldman, Alassane Kane, and Tyler Collins each registered goals in the American University men's soccer team's 3-0 victory over Colgate on Saturday afternoon at Reeves Field.
American (2-6-1, 1-0-0 PL) got off to a fantastic start with Goldman's 13th-minute score, his second strike of the season. On the play, Colin Seigfreid fed his corner kick to the near-side of the goal where a streaking Goldman was able to fight off a Colgate defender and get his head on the low pass. Goldman's shot beat Colgate goalkeeper Grant Reed and the Eagles had struck first.
AU took the 2-0 lead in the 23rd minute when Kane drew a penalty shot following a Colgate handball in the goalbox. Kane calmly knocked his penalty kick to the left of Reed for his third goal of the season.
The Eagles added their third goal in the 66th minute when Seigfreid dumped a pass to Collins in the offensive zone. Newly-inserted Colgate goalkeeper Chris Miller came out to challenge the play, but Collins was able to chip his shot into the back of the net from 25 yards out.
Colgate (5-2-1, 0-1-0 PL), the defending conference regular season champions, generated a few good scoring chances throughout the match, but AU goalkeeper Matt Makowski was up to the challenge on each occasion. The first legitimate Raiders' opportunity came in the 15th minute of play just after AU had taken the 1-0 lead. Colgate's Jimmy McLaughlin had a chance in transition, but Makowski came out to make the solid save. Then early in the second half, the Raiders had back-to-back chances as they tried to claw their way back in the match. Makowski, however, made both plays, stopping Mike Reidy on the first occasion and then turning away James Byer's shot. In total, Makowski made five saves in the match to pitch the shutout, snapping Colgate's nine-match Patriot League regular season unbeaten streak. The Raiders had not lost in regular season conference play since October 24, 2009, when they dropped a 2-1 decision to Bucknell.
The Raiders actually held a narrow 11-10 advantage in shots, although American fired seven shots on goal compared to five for Colgate. Kane was actively on the Eagles' attack, recording a game-high five shots.
The Eagles will return to Reeves Field for their next match, a non-conference tilt against Virginia Tech this Tuesday, September 27. Match time is scheduled for 3 p.m. and it will be carried live on Eagles Vision TV.
