Box Score Richmond's Chelsea Davies registered an overtime goal to lift the homestanding Spiders to a 2-1 victory over the American University field hockey team Friday afternoon.
After a scoreless opening half, Richmond (5-3) took a 1-0 advantage in the 45th minute on a score by Liesl Schnuck. With less than six minutes remaining in regulation, American (2-5) found the equalizer when Alex McMackin knocked home her team-leading fourth goal of the season. Shelly Montgomery picked up the assist on the play.
With the score tied 1-1 after regulation time, the game went to sudden-death overtime where Davies registered the game-winner in the 84th minute.
For the second straight game, the Eagles held a decisive advantage in shots but were unable to capitalize on their plentiful opportunities. AU outshot the Spiders by a 15-8 margin, including an 11-5 advantage in shots on goal. American fired seven shots in the first half while holding Richmond without a shot during the period. The Eagles also earned seven penalty corners compared to only four for the Spiders.
Individually for American, Gina Hofmann fired a game-high five shots, four of which were on target. Jaclyn Anspach, Montgomery, and Tatum Dyer also recorded two shots apiece.
American will return home to close out the weekend when it hosts sixth-ranked Boston College on Sunday, September 25. Game time from Jacobs Field is set for 1 p.m. and all the action will be broadcast live on Eagles Vision TV.
