The American University men's basketball team picked up its seventh consecutive win for the first time since the 2008-09 season with a 66-60 victory over St. Joseph's. Charles Hinkle had a career-high 32 points to lead the Eagles as the team remains a perfect 5-0 in Bender Arena.
Hinkle was 5-of-9 from beyond the arc and 10-of-16 from the field, also shooting a perfect 7-of-7 from the foul line. The senior also led American as he posted a career-high eight rebounds in the game. Troy Brewer also scored in double-digits for the Eagles, scoring 12 points on 4-of-11 shooting from the field as Daniel Munoz added nine points. Brewer also led the team with four assists and added four boards and two steals.
St. Joseph's (5-3) jumped out to an early lead, before Brewer was able to tie the game at 15 apiece with 11:53 to play. American was able to go on a 12-4 run to take the 27-19 lead off a Hinkle three. Brewer hit a three to bring the lead back to seven and a pair of Riley Grafft free throws gave the Eagles the nine-point advantage, 33-24, with under two minutes to play.
Munoz hit a three to put the Eagles up 10 for the first time in the game, 36-26. A jumper from C.J. Aiken cut it back to eight with 44.2 seconds to play before Blake Jolivette hit a two to end the half and keep American up by 10, 38-28.
American (7-2) shot 50.0 percent from the field in the first half and 46.2 percent beyond the arc as Hinkle led the team with 17 points in the first half. The senior was 6-of-10 from the field and 3-of-6 from beyond the arc. Hinkle also led the team with four rebounds. Brewer had seven points in the first half and Munoz added six, including going 2-from-2 beyond the arc in the first. St. Joseph's shot 48.0 percent from the field in the first.
The Eagles opened the half with a three from Hinkle, 41-28, before St. Joseph's answered right back with a tre of their own, 41-31. The Hawks went on a 20-8 run over the next eight minutes of play to tie the game at 51 apiece with 7:55 to play. Hinkle hit a pair of free throws to give the Eagles back the two-point lead, 53-51. The senior made a huge three and the free throw to put American back up six, 57-51, with 4:47 left in the game.
St. Joseph's would cut the lead to two, 57-55, with an Aiken fade away jumper with 2:39 to play before free throws from Brewer, Daniel Fisher and Munoz gave the Eagles the six-point advantage with under a minute to play, 61-55. The Hawks would cut it to three off a lay-up from Halil Kanacevic but a Brewer dunk and one after a foul on the play would secure American's seventh straight win, 66-60.
"Our guys played really, really hard," said Head Coach Jeff Jones following the win. "We were all the things that we said we needed to be. We were scrappy, we were resilient, we were opportunistic and that's just a really nice win against a very good St. Joe's team. It was a terrific team effort."
American shot 43.1 percent in the game from the field and 44.4 percent from beyond the arc. St. Joseph's was 42.4 percent from the field and 17.6 percent from three-point range on the day. Carl Jones led the Hawks with 13 points as Aiken, Kanacevic and Ronald Roberts each added 11. Kanacevic also led the team with 10 boards as Aiken had six blocks.
