Men's Basketball Defeats Florida Atlantic for First Win of the Season; Watch Highlights

The American University men's basketball team earned its first win of the season as three Eagles posted career records as the team defeated Florida Atlantic, 62-56, in the home opener.

Charles Hinkle and Blake Jolivette each recorded career highs in points with 27 and 14, respectively. Hinkle also added a team-high four assists and six rebounds. Tony Wroblicky recorded seven blocks for the Eagles, which is good for fifth all-time at American in a single game. He also led the team with eight rebounds.

Florida Atlantic (1-3) took a quick 4-2 lead to start the game before Hinkle hit a pair of free throws to tie it at four with 14:03 on the clock. Troy Brewer added five points for American (1-2) with Jolivette adding a mid-range jumper to put the Eagles up 11-6 with 8:30 remaining.

Neither team scored for just under two minutes, but Jolivette was able to lay it in to end the drought and put the Eagles up seven, 13-6, before Omari Grier hit a three to take the lead back to four with 6:36 left in the game.

But the Owls were able to retake the lead, 16-15, as Grier hit another three from deep. Hinkle tied it at 16 with a free throw, but Florida Atlantic made two of their own to take the 18-16 lead with 3:22 on the clock. The Eagles went on a 9-0 run to end the half, with Jolivette hitting a three at the buzzer to put the Eagles up 27-18.

American shot 34.5 percent from the field in the first half, with Florida Atlantic shooting 25.0 percent. Hinkle led the Eagles with 13 points in the first as Jolivette added seven and Brewer adding five. Wroblicky led the team with six rebounds and three blocks. Grier recorded six points to lead the Owls as Kore White posted four rebounds to end the first.

Florida Atlantic scored the only points in the first five and a half minutes of the second half, 27-20, before Daniel Munoz added a pull-up jumper just inside the three-point line, 29-22 at 14:03. The teams traded points before a Hinkle dunk was able to give the Eagles the momentum and the 39-30 lead with 9:13 remaining, as he also hit a free throw after being fouled on the play. Wayne Simon II added a lay-up before Pablo Bertone added one of his own with 8:02 left on the clock, 41-34.

The Owls were able to bring it back within four with 4:30 remaining before a Jolivette jumper took American's lead back to seven, 45-39. Hinkle continued to score for the Eagles after being fouled on a made three and also hitting the free throw, 53-45. The senior scored a career high 27 points, breaking his previous record of 25 on free throws with 56.2 seconds remaining, 55-47. Jolivette also recorded his career high points (14) on a pair of free throws, 60-54.

Florida Atlantic would add two to bring the score to 61-56, before Daniel Fisher ended the game with a free throw to put the final score at 62-56.

American shot 37.0 percent from the field and 80.0 percent from the free throw line, as the Owls shot 36.1 percent. Florida Atlantic out-rebounded the Eagles, 45-32, but American held the advantage in blocks (8-5) and steals (8-5).
