Alex McMackin registered two goals to lead the American University field hockey team past Georgetown, 3-0, in the Eagles' home finale Sunday afternoon at Jacobs Field.
American (8-7) struck first when Shelly Montgomery scored in the seventh penalty of play to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. Ten minutes later, McMackin struck for her first score of the afternoon on a tip-in off a penalty corner. Gina Hofmann picked up the assist on the play.
AU took a 2-0 advantage into halftime and McMackin added an insurance goal in the 43rd minute with Courtney MacPherson recording the helper. That is all the offense the Eagles needed as they held off Georgetown (2-15) to earn the 3-0 victory.
The Eagles held a decisive 34-5 advantage in shots, which included a 16-2 edge in shots on goal. AU generated 14 penalty corners compared to only one for the Hoyas.
Ashley Dalisera and Stephanie Burry combined in goal to earn the shuout for American. Each goalkeeper registered one save.
Prior to the match – AU's three seniors -- Melissa Casale, Tatum Dyer, and Natalie Ellenberger -- were honored in a Senior Day ceremony. The senior class has played a major role in AU's three straight Patriot League Championships and subsequent NCAA Tournament berths. They have helped the Eagles post a 51-28 record over the last four seasons, including a 17-2 mark in Patriot League play.
The Eagles will close out the regular season on Saturday, October 29 at 12 p.m. when they visit Lafayette. The winner of the matchup in Easton will earn the top seed and the right to host the Patriot League Tournament, which will be played November 4-5.
