The American University volleyball team defeated both Campbell
and William & Mary on Saturday en route to winning the 2010
Colonial Challenge. Senior Magdalena
Tekiel was named the tournament MVP as she led the
Eagles to a perfect 3-0 weekend.
American (6-1) needed five sets to defeat Campbell (1-6) during
the morning session, earning the victory by scores of 25-12, 23-25,
19-25, 25-15 and 15-6. The Eagles looked strong in sets one, four
and five, and outscored the Camels by a margin of 65-33. American
held a .403 hitting percentage in the three sets while limiting
Campbell to just a .070 mark. For the match, American hit .287
against Campbell's .147 mark with 10 blocks.
Tekiel led the way for American with her third double-double of
the year. She recorded 20 kills, 12 digs and six block assists,
finishing the match with a .447 hitting percentage. Juliana
Crum also notched a double-double against the Camels,
the first of her career, with 11 kills and 13 digs.

Waterman added 15 kills as Katerina
Cinkova chipped in seven kills and five block assists.
Krysta
Cicala paced the offense with 49 assists while
Deborah
Frantz notched 19 digs.
The Eagles concluded their title run against host William &
Mary (3-3) Saturday night with a straight set victory, 25-19, 25-20
and 25-19. Tekiel and Waterman notched 17 kills apiece in the win
as the two combined to hit .391 for the match. Cicala dished out 40
aassists and added 12 digs, recording her second career
double-double.
American hit only .231 as a team but held the Griffins to a .117
hitting percentage. Frantz led the defensive charge with 13 digs
while Cinkova totaled four block assists.
American opened the tournament on Friday with a 3-0 win over
Hampton. The Eagles have now claimed two tournament titles this
season after also winning the D.C. Volleyball Challenge last
weekend.
Tekiel was named the Colonial Challenge MVP at the conclusion of
the tournament, marking her second tournament MVP honor in as many
weeks. The senior finished her weekend hitting .376 and averaged
4.4 kps, 2.3 dps and 0.9 bps. Tekiel was also named the D.C.
Volleyball Challenge MVP after leading the Eagles to their third
title in four years.
Waterman and Crum joined Tekiel on the All-Tournament Team.
Waterman averaged 3.6 kps and hit .342 for the weekend while Crum
added 2.4 kps and 2.6 dps with a 2.71 hitting percentage. Waterman
was also named to the D.C. Volleyball Challenge All-Tournament
Team. Crum, meanwhile, earned her first career All-Tournament Team
selection.
American's 6-1 record to begin the year marks the team's best
start through seven matches since the 2000 season. The Eagles began
that year 15-1 en route to a 26-4 overall record.
American will return to action on Friday, September 10, at
Oregon at 10:00 p.m. The Eagles will also play Siena on Saturday,
