Box Score The American University men's soccer team travelled to Virginia
Tech on Tuesday night for a non-conference contest, and came up on
the short end of a 1-0 decision.
American (4-4, 1-0 Patriot League) actually outshot Virginia
Tech (3-4-1, 1-0-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) by a 14-12 margin in
the match, although the Eagles were unable to push anything behind
Hokie goalkeeper Kyle Renfro. The Eagles also held a 6-4
advantage in shots on goal in the 90 minutes in Blacksburg.
The difference in the match was a 55th minute goal by Virginia
Tech's Mikey Minutillo, who was able to fire a straight-on shot
from inside the goal box past American goalkeeper Matt
Makowski.
Jack
Scott led AU with four shots in the match, one of
which was on goal. Scott had an opportunity to tie the match in the
83rd minute on a Jamie
Davin corner kick, but his header sailed wide
left.
Additionally, Davin and Mike
Worden each recorded three shots for AU. Worden had
the final legitimate scoring chance for the Eagles, although his
86th minute shot was saved by Renfro.
"We played well in stretches tonight, but as a team we did not
bring the urgency necessary to win an ACC match on the road," Head
Coach Todd West said. "After we allowed the
goal, we brought the intensity level up but it was too late as we
missed some opportunities. Hopefully we can take this lesson into
our next conference game at Army on Saturday."
Makowski, who was named the Patriot League Goalkeeper of the
Week for his performances against Virginia and Bucknell last week,
made three saves in net for the Eagles. He allowed the lone goal
and faced 12 total shots from Virginia Tech.
Virginia Tech's victory over the Eagles helps to avenge last
year's 1-0 American win in Blacksburg on September 23, 2009. In
that contest, Worden scored the lone goal of the match.
The Eagles will return to action when visit Army on Saturday,
October 2, as they look to move to 2-0 in Patriot League play.
Match time from West Point, N.Y., is slated for 7 p.m.
