Box Score Led by a two-goal performance by Shelly
Montgomery, the No. 15 American University field
hockey team earned its sixth straight win on Sunday, defeating St.
Joseph's 5-0 in Philadelphia. Four Eagles scored in the victory as
Hannah
Weitzman picked up her second shutout of the
season.
American (7-2) put the pressure on early, firing 10 shots in the
opening 15 minutes of play. The Eagles finally broke through in the
24th minute as Montgomery converted off a penalty corner. The
freshmen scored off a pass from Gina
Hofmann for her fourth goal of the year, putting
American on top 1-0.
The Eagles had one more scoring opportunity before halftime, but
Anne van Erp's attempt was blocked by
a St. Joseph's (3-6) defender. At the break, American held a 14-1
advantage in shots and a 7-0 margin in corners.
The Eagles continued their attack on the Owl cage early in the
second half, taking a 2-0 lead just over one minute in. Constanza
Palma setup the scoring opportunity as she sent a long
pass from the corner into the circle. Lotte
van de Mierop was positioned in front of the cage to
receive the pass and tapped it in for her fourth goal of the
year.
Shay
Smith added American's third goal less than two
minutes later as she sent a blast from the top of the circle into
the back of the cage off a feed from van Erp. Montgomery and
Hofmann connected again in the 60th minute, with Montgomery
deflecting a pass from Hofmann off a corner to put the score at
4-0. American tacked on one final goal in the 68th minute, when
Christine
Fingerhuth converted a penalty stroke to give the
Eagles the final 5-0 margin.
American controlled play for the entire match, outshooting St.
Joseph's 31-4 while holding a 15-3 advantage in corners. Weitzman
made two saves in the cage to preserve the shutout, her second of
the season.
With four different Eagles recording a goal on Sunday, American
has now had five matches this season in which three or more
student-athletes have scored. Montgomery leads the team with five
tallies while Fingerhuth and van de Mierop have each notched four.
A total of 12 Eagles have scored at least one goal on the year.
American has now won each of its last six matches, marking the
team's longest win streak since the 2007 season. The Eagles enjoyed
two separate winning streaks of eight matches and six matches that
year, en route to a 16-5 overall record and the team's fifth
straight Patriot League Championship.
The Eagles will open Patriot League play next weekend when they
visit Lehigh on Saturday, October 2, for an 11:00 a.m. showdown.
American will also play at No. 4 Princeton on Sunday, October 3,
1:00 p.m.
