Box Score

Led by a two-goal performance by Shelly Montgomery, the No. 15 American University field hockey team earned its sixth straight win on Sunday, defeating St. Joseph's 5-0 in Philadelphia. Four Eagles scored in the victory as Hannah Weitzman picked up her second shutout of the season.

American (7-2) put the pressure on early, firing 10 shots in the opening 15 minutes of play. The Eagles finally broke through in the 24th minute as Montgomery converted off a penalty corner. The freshmen scored off a pass from Gina Hofmann for her fourth goal of the year, putting American on top 1-0.

The Eagles had one more scoring opportunity before halftime, but Anne van Erp's attempt was blocked by a St. Joseph's (3-6) defender. At the break, American held a 14-1 advantage in shots and a 7-0 margin in corners.

The Eagles continued their attack on the Owl cage early in the second half, taking a 2-0 lead just over one minute in. Constanza Palma setup the scoring opportunity as she sent a long pass from the corner into the circle. Lotte van de Mierop was positioned in front of the cage to receive the pass and tapped it in for her fourth goal of the year.

Shay Smith added American's third goal less than two minutes later as she sent a blast from the top of the circle into the back of the cage off a feed from van Erp. Montgomery and Hofmann connected again in the 60th minute, with Montgomery deflecting a pass from Hofmann off a corner to put the score at 4-0. American tacked on one final goal in the 68th minute, when Christine Fingerhuth converted a penalty stroke to give the Eagles the final 5-0 margin.

American controlled play for the entire match, outshooting St. Joseph's 31-4 while holding a 15-3 advantage in corners. Weitzman made two saves in the cage to preserve the shutout, her second of the season.

With four different Eagles recording a goal on Sunday, American has now had five matches this season in which three or more student-athletes have scored. Montgomery leads the team with five tallies while Fingerhuth and van de Mierop have each notched four. A total of 12 Eagles have scored at least one goal on the year.

American has now won each of its last six matches, marking the team's longest win streak since the 2007 season. The Eagles enjoyed two separate winning streaks of eight matches and six matches that year, en route to a 16-5 overall record and the team's fifth straight Patriot League Championship.

The Eagles will open Patriot League play next weekend when they visit Lehigh on Saturday, October 2, for an 11:00 a.m. showdown. American will also play at No. 4 Princeton on Sunday, October 3, 1:00 p.m.
