Box Score 2 The American University volleyball team captured the 2010 D.C.
Volleyball Challenge title on Saturday, marking the team's third
D.C. Challenge crown in the last four years. The Eagles defeated
George Washington in their first match of the day, 3-0, to secure
the tournament win before falling to Georgetown in their final
match, 3-0.
American (2-1) opened the day with a straight-set victory over
George Washington (2-1), 25-19, 32-30, 26-24. Angelina
Waterman led the way for the Eagles with her second
career double-double, recording 19 kills and a career-high 22 digs.
The senior finished the match with a .364 hitting percentage,
converting her 19 kills on 44 attempts with only three errors.
Magdalena
Tekiel chipped in 16 kills and 11 digs against the
Colonials, notching her second double-double in as many games.
Tekiel scored her 16 kills on 36 attempts with three errors for a
.361 hitting percentage. Bianca
Richardson tallied a career-high 10 kills and five
digs.
Krysta
Cicala dished out 56 assists to guide American to a
.343 team hitting percentage. Deborah
Frantz finished the match with 18 digs and Katerina
Cinkova led the team with four block assists. The
Eagles defense limited the Colonials to a .242 hitting percentage,
recording seven blocks and 60 digs.
American dropped its final match of the tournament to Georgetown
(1-2), falling 27-25, 25-19, 25-20. The Eagles were held to a .190
hitting percentage while the Hoyas finished the match at .327.
Tekiel scored a team-high nine kills with six digs and three block
assists. Richardson and Waterman each totaled six kills.
Despite the loss to Georgetown, American's victory over
George Washington secured the Eagles their third D.C. Volleyball
Challenge title in four years. The Eagles also won the tournament
in 2007 and 2008.
American will return to the court on Wednesday, September 1, at
home in Bender Arena against Coppin State. Fans unable to attend
