Box Score Amanda
Makoid netted four goals for the American University
women's lacrosse team, but it was not enough as the Eagles
came up on the short end of a 17-12 decision at Virginia Tech
Saturday afternoon in Blacksburg, Va.
Virginia Tech (5-9) set the tone early, scoring nine of the
first 10 goals in the first 23 minutes of the game to take control.
The lone goal by American (5-9) during the stretch came off the
stick of Makoid. The Eagles, however, responded with the final four
goals of the half to cut the halftime deficit to 9-5. Emily
Stankiewicz began the scoring run for AU, which was
followed by a pair of goals by Lisa
Schaaf and Makoid's second of the game.
The Eagles kept the momentum at the start of the second half, as
Makoid began the scoring less than two minutes in to cut the
Hokies' lead to 9-6. Emily
Burton followed 15 seconds later to get the Eagles
within two, 9-7, with 28:01 to play.
But that is as close as the Eagles would get. Virginia Tech
converted the game's next three goals to open up a 12-7
advantage before Samantha
Marshall stopped the run for the Eagles. Minutes
later, back-to-back goals from Chiara
Speziale and Brit
Ferguson trimmed Virginia Tech's advantage to
13-10 with 17:41 to go. The Hokies, however, recorded four straight
goals over the next 11-plus minutes to open up a 17-10 lead at the
5:51 mark.
Maeve
Koch and Makoid registered late goals for American,
but it was not enough, as Virginia Tech came away with the 17-12
home victory.
Makoid led the Eagles with five points on four goals and an
assist. This marks the third time this season the senior has
matched her career-best with four scores, and she has now scored 10
goals in the last three games. Additionally, Makoid recorded a
game-high seven groundballs and tied a team-high with three draw
controls.
Schaaf was also productive on the offensive end for the Eagles,
registering a career-high-matching four points on two goals and two
assists.
The Hokies were paced by Morgan Widlake, who recorded a
game-high six goals and also added two assists.
The Eagles will return to action on Sunday, April 18 when they
host Davidson in their final home contest of the season. AU's
five senior student-athletes will be honored in a pregame Senior
Day ceremony.
