Senior Amanda
Makoid matched a career-high with four goals as the
American University women's lacrosse team defeated Old Dominion,
12-10, on Saturday afternoon at Jacobs Field. The Eagles scored
eight of the game's final 11 goals to earn the come-from-behind
victory, their first ever against the Monarchs.
Old Dominion (0-1) took an early 2-0 lead over American (2-4)
before an unassisted Emily
Stankiewicz goal got the Eagles on the board six-plus
minutes into the game. The Monarchs regained a two-goal advantage,
3-1, until back-to-back AU strikes evened the game at three. Makoid
knocked home the first and Lisa
Schaaf scored the second off a Lauren
Schoenberger feed.
The Monarchs responded with four of the game's next five goals
to take a 7-4 lead with 3:17 to go in the first half. Maeve
Koch recorded American's lone goal during the stretch
off a free position shot.
From that point on, AU began to assume control of the contest,
beginning with an unassisted goal by Emily
Burton late in the first half to cut the halftime
deficit to two, 7-5. The Eagles started the second half with three
straight goals to take an 8-7 advantage with 21:37 to play, their
first lead of the game. Makoid, Chiara
Speziale and Bernadette
Maher registered American's goals during the run.
After an Old Dominion conversion tied the game at eight, the
Eagles again knocked home three straight goals over a six-plus
minute stretch to take an 11-8 lead. Makoid converted the first two
of the goals for American and Paige
Lin recorded the final goal during the run, which came
at the 9:34 mark of the second half. Schaaf later added an
insurance goal for the Eagles as they came away with the 12-10 home
victory.
Makoid's four goals match her career-high, which she previous
set last season at George Mason. Schaaf also added two goals, which
also ties her previous career-best. Schoenberger recorded a
game-high two assists for the Eagles as well.
Ashley Kellogg and Nicole McMahon scored three goals apiece to
lead Old Dominion.
Emma
Larkin paced the Eagles with four groundballs, while
Koch and Stankiewicz each had a team-high four draw controls for
AU. Goalkeeper Kaska
Komokinski registered five saves for the Eagles in
picking up her second victory of the season.
The Eagles will return to action next Saturday, March 13 when
they host Colgate in both squads' Patriot League opener. Game time
is scheduled for 1 p.m.
