Box Score Senior Amanda Makoid matched a career-best
with five points and junior Brit Ferguson registered a career-high
nine draw controls in leading the American University women's
lacrosse team to a 15-13 victory at Bucknell on Saturday afternoon
in Lewisburg, Pa. The win evens the Eagles' record at 1-1 in
Patriot League play.
Makoid began the scoring for American (3-6, 1-1 PL) 16 seconds
into the game with her opening goal off a pass from Lauren Schoenberger. Bucknell (1-8,
0-2 PL) responded with the next three goals to take a 3-1 advantage
before the Eagles fired back with three straight goals of their own
to regain the 4-3 lead at the 13:01 mark of the first half.
Schoenberger scored the first and third goals during the stretch,
while Makoid recorded the second strike. Makoid also picked up an
assist on Schoenberger's first goal while Kimberly Collins was credited with the
helper on Makoid's goal. The Bison scored two of the next
three goals to knot the score at five with 6:52 remaining in the
opening half. Chiara Speziale scored AU's
fifth goal of the game, which came unassisted.
The Eagles scored the final two goals of the half to take a 7-5
lead into intermission. Emily Burton was credited with the
first goal and Samantha Marshall followed with the
final goal of the half for AU.
Marshall began the second half strong for AU with an opening
goal to give American an 8-5 lead. Bucknell, however, fired back
with three straight goals over the following three-plus minutes to
tie the score at eight. Paige Lin registered the game's
next goal at the 23:22 mark to give AU a 9-8 advantage, and it was
followed by strikes by Makoid and Emily Stankiewicz, which extended
American's margin to three, 11-8, with 22:35 to play.
Bucknell converted three of the game's next four goals
midway through the half to cut AU's lead to one, 12-11,
although Makoid broke up the momentium with a key goal to open
American's lead back to two at the 11:34 mark. The Bison
again cut the deficit to one, 13-12, with 9:14 to play, and the
game remained knotted at that score for the next seven minutes.
With time winding down and the outcome still in doubt, Lin
converted a key insurance goal with 2:14 to play to extend
AU's lead back to two, 14-12. Stankiewicz quickly followed
with another strike to give AU a 15-12 lead with 1:36 to go, and
the Eagles held on for the 15-13 victory.
Makoid matched career-bests with four goals and five points,
while Burton, Lin, Marshall, Schoenberger and Stankiewicz each
contributed a pair of goals for the Eagles. Emma Larkin led the Eagles with three
groundballs, while Ferguson registered a career-best nine draw
controls. Ferguson also forced two caused turnovers, while Erin McDevitt recorded a team-best
three.
Kaska Komosinski played all 60
minutes in goal for the Eagles, recording five saves for the
victory.
The Eagles outshot Bucknell by a 42-21 margin, and held a 16-11
advantage in groundballs collected. AU also controlled 19 of the
game's 30 draws.
AU will return to Jacobs Field for each of its next three games,
beginning on Wednesday, March 24 when the Eagles host George Mason.
