The American University women's lacrosse team outscored Stony
Brook by an 11-3 margin in the second half, including nine
consecutive goals in a 21:39 span to end the game, to earn the
come-from-behind road win on Saturday afternoon. Sophomores Lauren
Schoenberger and Emily
Stankiewicz each recorded three goals for the Eagles.
Stony Brook (1-3) opened the game with the first four goals
before American (1-3) responded with back-to-back strikes by Brit
Ferguson and Schoenberger to cut the deficit in half,
4-2 with 15:30 remaining. The Seawolves scored three of the last
four goals of the first half to take a 7-3 lead into halftime.

Koch was credited with American's lone goal during the
stretch.
The second half began on a more positive note for the Eagles, as
Makoid and Stankiewicz opened with back-to-back conversions in the
first three-plus minutes to cut the deficit to two, 7-5. Stony
Brook, however, responded with the next three goals to open up a
five-goal lead, 10-5, with 22:51 to play.
From that point on, it was all American, as the Eagles scored
the game's final nine goals to pull out the dramatic
come-from-behind victory. Freshman Chiara
Speziale opened up the scoring with two straight goals
off assists from Stankiewicz and classmate Samantha
Marshall to trim the deficit to three, 10-7. Senior Amanda
Makoid then added her sixth goal of the season off a
Schoenberger feed to get back within two goals with 14:51 to play.
With all the momentum in their favor, the Eagles continued to
apply the pressure, scoring the next three goals in a 1:38 span to
take its first lead of the day, 11-10. Stankiewicz scored the first
goal during the stretch and then Marshall added an unassisted
strike to tie the score at 10. Senior Lisa
Schaaf registered the go-ahead goal at the 10-minute
mark of the second half to give AU the lead.
American added three late insurance goals to come away with the
14-10 victory. Schoenberger was responsible for the first two with
Speziale and Ferguson picking up assists. Stankiewicz tallied the
final goal of the afternoon, which came with 1:01 on the clock, to
set the final margin.
Schoenberger and Stankiewicz each recorded four points for the
Eagles on three goals and an assist. Marshall also registered four
points on a goal and three assists. Ferguson and Speziale added
three points apiece as well for AU.
Senior Alyssa
Romano collected a game-high six groundballs for AU,
while sophomore Emma
Larkin and Stankiewicz each had four. Larkin also led
the Eagles with three caused turnovers.
Sophomore Kaska
Komosinski played the final 49:55 in goal for
American, allowing six goals while tallying seven saves.
After beginning the season with four straight road games, the
Eagles will make their season debut on the turf of Jacobs Field on
Wednesday, March 3 against Richmond. Game time is slated for 4 p.m.
