Women's Lacrosse Edged 12-11 in OT at George Washington

The American University women's lacrosse team travelled to local-rival George Washington on Wednesday afternoon, and fell 12-11 in overtime. Four Eagles scored two goals apiece, although Hilary Quinn's overtime goal for the Colonials with five seconds remaining was the difference.

Sophomore Paige Lin got American (0-3) on the scoreboard less than five minutes into the game to take a 1-0 lead. After a George Washington (1-1) goal, senior Maeve Koch connected on her first goal of the season to give AU a 2-1 advantage. The Colonials, however, responded with the game's next three strikes to take a 4-2 lead before Koch knocked home her second goal of the game to cut the margin to one, 4-3, with 13:04 to go in the first half. Facing a 5-3 deficit, the Eagles closed the first half with back-to-back goals by senior Lisa Schaaf and sophomore Bernadette Maher, the third of the season for each, to knot the score at five at intermission.

George Washington came out in the second half firing on all cylinders, scoring the first four goals to take a 9-5 advantage with 21:12 remaining in the game. Senior Amanda Makoid broke the scoreless streak for the Eagles to cut the deficit to three, but the Colonials came right back to take a 10-6 lead with 19:08 to go.

Trailing by four goals, the Eagles refused to go away easily, rallying for five of final six goals in regulation to force overtime. The scoring barrage began with goals by a pair of freshman, Kimberly Collins and Chiara Speziale, to trim the GW lead to 10-8. The Colonials came back with a goal to extend its advantage to 11-8 with 6:51 remaining before AU scored the final three goals of regulation. Makoid, Speziale and Schaaf were responsible for the goals, the latter by Schaaf which came with 1:11 remaining in regulation.

With game knotted at 11 after 60 minutes of play, it moved to a five-minute overtime session. Junior Brit Ferguson recorded AU's lone shot in the session. With only five seconds remaining in OT, George Washington's Hilary Quinn connected on the game-winner, firing an unassisted shot past AU goalkeeper Frankie Solomon.

Koch, Makoid,Schaaf and Speziale each recorded two goals for the Eagles, while George Washington was paced by three goals apiece from Quinn, Sarah Phillips and Megan Seidman.

AU outshot the Colonials by a 40-28 margin, and committed three fewer turnovers (19-16). GW collected 15 groundballs in the game to American's 12.

The Eagles will return to action on Saturday, February 27 when they visit Stony Brook. Game time is slated for 12 p.m.
