Senior Matt
Pelletier won his first career conference championship
when he captured the 100 back in 49.61 seconds on Friday at the
Patriot League swimming and diving championships, which are taking
place at Navy's Lejeune Hall in Annapolis, Md.
Pelletier, who is currently the school record-holder in the 100
back, qualified for the finals with a time of 49.16 in the
afternoon session. He followed that performance with a time of
49.61 in the finals later in the evening, which bested Lehigh's
Tyler Lareau by nearly half a second. Pelletier is the second
active swimmer on AU's roster to claim a Patriot League
Championship, as last year, then-sophomore Dory
Isaacs won the 100 breast.
In other men's action from Friday, Chris Meadows and Sean
McNamara each recorded 12th place finishes in their respective
events. Meadows swam a 1:00.00 in the 100 breast while McNamara's
result was in the 200 free (1:42.80). Additionally, Ming Ong
claimed 13th place in the 400 IM (4:08.71).
On the women's side, Isaacs came up just short of back-to-back
titles in the 100 breast, finishing in second place in a time of
1:02.23. Eleanor
Clay and Anna
Gooding claimed 12th (1:07.19) and 15th (1:08.22)
place, respectively, in the event.
Jess
Ballance had a busy day in the pool for the Eagles,
earning a pair of top seven finishes. She came in sixth in the 100
back (57.30) and seventh in the 100 fly (56.93), good for the
fourth fastest time in AU history. Ballance's 100 back time was
just shy of her 56.73-second clip that is the second best in
program history, which she swam on Thursday in the first leg of the
400 medley relay.
Additionally, the 200 medley relay team of Balance, Isaacs, Elinor
Shetter and Leah
Breen claimed third place (1:45.01).
In the diving competition, the Eagles' were highlighted by Kelsey
Monarch's 10th place finish in the one-meter event.
Both American's men's and women's teams sit in six place through
two days of competition. The third and final day of swimming will
get underway at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday.
