Moldoveanu's 32 Lifts Men's Basketball to Cable Car Classic Title

Box Score

Vlad Moldoveanu scored a season-high 32 points to lead the American University men's basketball team to an 83-71 win over Delaware Thursday in the championship game of the 44th annual Cable Car Classic.

The victory improves American to 9-5 on the year, marking the most non-conference wins for the team since 1982-83.

It was Moldoveanu's second 30-point performance of the season and eighth game with at least 20 points. The senior was 12-of-20 from the floor and 3-of-5 from three, and also grabbed seven rebounds. For his efforts he was named the Cable Car Classic Tournament MVP.

Stephen Lumpkins joined Moldoveanu on the All-Tournament Team after chipping in 15 points and nine rebounds, narrowly missing his second double-double in as many games. Daniel Munoz tallied 11 points and was one of five Eagles to score at least five points.

American's 83 points represent a season-high, while its 57.1 percent shooting performance is also the team's best of the year. The Eagles held a 44-24 advantage in points in the paint for the game and scored 21 points off 13 Delaware (6-5) turnovers.

Moldoveanu scored the game's first seven points as the Eagles opened the night on a 7-0 run. American held Delaware scoreless for five minutes during the stretch, forcing three turnovers while the Blue Hens went 0-of-4 from the floor. Delaware eventually shot its way back into the game with three three-pointers but a Moldoveanu turnaround jumper put the Eagles out in front 19-13.

American took its first double-digit lead off a Lumpkins dunk and Moldoveanu bucket, 27-16. Tony Wroblicky later pushed the margin to 34-21 with a layup in transition. After Delaware had closed to within 34-26, Moldoveanu hit a pair of three-pointers to give the Eagles a 40-26 lead at the break.

Moldoveanu finished the first half with 19 points and five rebounds, shooting 8-of-12 from the floor and 3-of-4 from three. Lumpkins chipped in eight points and five boards.

American shot 57.1 percent for the frame and committed just two turnovers while limiting Delaware to 43.5 percent shooting and forcing seven turnovers. The Eagles also outrebounded the Blue Hens 15-10 and held a 20-8 advantage in points in the paint.

Moldoveanu opened the second half just as he did the first, scoring five straight points to extend American's advantage to 45-28. Alphonso Dawson capped off a 14-4 Delaware stretch with a three-pointer to cut the lead to 49-42, but back-to-back baskets by Munoz ended the run and began a 10-0 stretch for the Eagles. Simon McCormack scored four points during the run including the last two to push the score to 59-42.

Four straight points from Moldoveanu gave American a 20-point edge, 71-51, and the Eagles never looked back. American would hit 9-of-13 free throws in the final two minutes, securing the 83-71 victory.

American will return to Bender Arena for the first time in over a month when it hosts Brown on Monday, January 3 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets to the game are still available and can be purchased online by clicking here.
