The American Universtiy men's basketball team will play its second nationally ranked opponent in two weeks when it faces No. 6/6 Pittsburgh Wednesday, December 22 at 7:00 p.m. in Pittsburgh, Pa. Wednesday's game will be the first-ever meeting between the teams.
Wednesday's game will also mark the sixth game of American's current eight-game roadtrip. The Eagles defeated Mount St. Mary's 69-64 Monday in their most recent outing and have posted a 5-2 record on the road. American battled back from a four-point halftime deficit for the victory, shooting 52.0 percent after the break. Vlad Moldoveanu led the Eagles with 21 points at the Mount, scoring 18 in the second half. Stephen Lumpkins chipped in 16 points and six rebounds while Steve Luptak tallied a season-high nine points.
Moldoveanu will enter play Wednesday ranked second in the Patriot League with 19.3 ppg. The senior posted his sixth 20-plus performance of the season Monday and also ranks eighth in the conference with 5.5 rpg.
Troy Brewer is American's second-leading scorer at 12.8 ppg. Brewer enjoyed a seven-game run from Nov. 20 - Dec. 16 in which he averaged 15.9 ppg and made 48.9 percent (23-47) of his three-point attempts. Lumpkins, meanwhile, is averaging 12.0 ppg and is the conference's leading rebounder at 7.9 rpg.
Pittsburgh is currently ranked No. 6 in both the AP Top 25 and the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll. The Panthers own an 11-1 record with a perfect 8-0 mark at home. They are led by Ashton Gibbs who has netted 17.0 ppg on 46.8 percent shooting. Brad Wanamaker is averaging 12.4 ppg and 5.1 rpg while Gilbert Brown has added 10.9 ppg.
