The American University men's basketball team will look for a second straight win when it travels to play Northwestern Thursday, December 16 at 8:00 p.m. ET in Evanston, Ill. Thursday's game will mark the first-ever meeting between the teams.
American improved to 6-3 Tuesday with a 66-53 win at UMBC. Troy Brewer led the Eagles with 18 points, hitting 6-of-12 shots from the field and 4-of-8 from beyond the arc. Stephen Lumpkins notched his third double-double with 11 points and 10 boards while Daniel Munoz matched his season-high of 10 points.
Tuesday's game also marked the American debut of Charles Hinkle, who sat out the first semester after transfering from Vanderbilt. Hinkle played 23 minutes against the Retrievers and notched eight points, five rebounds, two assists and three steals.
Vlad Moldoveanu has led the Eagles in scoring in five of nine games this season and will enter play Tuesday ranked second in the Patriot League with 18.9 ppg. The senior also ranks second on the team in rebounding (5.6) and is shooting at a 40.2 percent clip. He has notched four 20-plus point performances already this year including a season-high 31 against UMES on November 17.
Brewer ranks second on the team with 14.1 ppg and has averaged 16.8 points over the Eagles' last six outings. Brewer has knocked down 21 of his last 44 three-point attempts (47.7%) and ranks fifth in the Patriot League with 0.9 blocks per game. Lumpkins, meanwhile, is averaging 12.2 ppg with a conference-best 8.9 rpg.
Northwestern will enter play Thursday with a perfect 6-0 record, having last defeated Long Island 82-65 Monday. The Wildcats are led by John Shurna who is averaging 23.0 ppg and shooting 64.3 percent from the floor. Drew Crawford has added 15.5 ppg while Michael Thompson has notched 15.2 ppg and a team-best 4.8 apg.
