#9 Field Hockey To Host NCAA Play-In Game Tuesday

The No. 9 American University field hockey team will look to clinch its seventh NCAA Tournament appearance in the last eight years with a win over Kent State at Jacobs Field on Tuesday, November 9 at 1:00 p.m in the NCAA Play-In Game.

American (17-3, 5-0) earned a spot in the play-in game after capturing its eighth consecutive Patriot League title with a 6-2 win over Lafayette on Saturday. The victory capped a record-setting weekend for the Eagles, who scored a tournament-high 14 goals in two games. Eight different student-athletes notched scored a goal and 12 recorded at least one point over the course of the weekend.

Senior Christine Fingerhuth received Tournament MVP honors by tallying two goals and an assist in tournament play, moving her into sixth place in both the American and Patriot League record books with 115 career points. With 51 career goals, the senior also ranks third in program history and in the conference. Junior Melissa Casale notched three goals over the weekend en route to her first career All-Tournament team award, while sophomore Gina Hofmann and senior Kirstin Gebhart combined for eight points to join Casale in receiving the honors..

The Eagles rank third in the NCAA with 3.8 goals per game and fourth with 10.95 points per game. They have tallied five or more goals on eight separate occasions and won their last four games by an average of four goals.

Kent State (15-6, 8-2) earned its spot in the play-in game by defeating Miami 3-2 in the MAC Tournament Championship. The Golden Flashes have won 10 of their last 11 games and are currently on an eight game winning streak. Besides going 8-2 in conference play, they also sport non-conference victories over No. 7 Syracuse and No. 10 Michigan State.

Kent State is led by junior forward Debbie Bell, who has 26 goals and seven assists on the season. Bell is a two-time All-MAC First Team selection and scored the game-winning goal to catapult her team to the NCAA Play-In Game. Four other Flashes have notched at least 15 points, and goalkeeper Caroline Suitch has tallied a pair of shutouts and a 1.94 gaa.

The Eagles and Flashes last met in 2007, when a pair of Fingerhuth goals led American to a 3-0 victory.
