The American University men's basketball team will travel to cross-town rival Howard on Tuesday, November 23 for a 7:00 p.m. showdown at Burr Gymnasium. The Eagles are 12-3 all-time against the Bison and have won each of the last seven meetings between the teams.
American (4-0) is off to its best start ever under Head Coach Jeff Jones, having won each of its first four games to open the year. The Eagles are coming off an impressive 82-72 win at Florida Atlantic on Saturday and have outscored their opponents by an average of 10 points per game. The Eagles 4-0 record currently stands as the sixth-best record in the NCAA and is the program's best start to a season since 1985-86.
Senior Vlad Moldoveanu has led the Eagles in scoring each game this season and will enter play Tuesday averaging 22.0 ppg and 6.3 rpg. Moldoveanu earned his second consecutive Patriot League Player of the Week honor Monday after notching 21.3 ppg, 6.3 rpg and 2.0 apg in three American wins last week. The senior scored a season-high 31 points on Wednesday as American defeated UMES 65-58 at Bender Arena and returned to the court Saturday to put up 22 points at Florida Atlantic, including 19 in the second half. Moldoveanu is shooting 45.9 percent (28-61) from the field this season and 41.7 (10-24) percent from three.
Stephen Lumpkins is coming off his first double-double of the season, having tallied 22 points and 15 rebounds at FAU. Lumpkins is averaging 13.3 ppg while shooting 55.6 percent (20-36) and has pulled down a team-best 8.8 rpg. Troy Brewer has chipped in 10.3 ppg and 4.3 rpg while Nick Hendra has added 7.5 ppg, 4.3 rpg and a team-leading 4.0 apg.
Howard (1-3) is currently riding a three-game losing streak after falling at St. Francis (N.Y.) Sunday, 70-52. The Bison have been plagued by turnovers this season, committing 63 through four games while shooting just 28.6 percent (61-123). Mike Phillips leads the team in both scoring and rebounding, averaging 10.3 ppg and 7.0 rpg.
