Moldoveanu and Lumpkins Combine for 44 in 82-72 Win at FAU

Vlad Moldoveanu and Stephen Lumpkins combined for 44 points to lead the American University men's basketball team to an 82-72 win over Florida Atlantic Saturday in Boca Raton, Fla.

The win was the fourth straight for the Eagles who are off to their first 4-0 start since 1985-86.

Moldoveanu's 22 points came on 7-of-17 shooting with a 7-of-7 performance from the line. The senior scored 19 points in the second half after foul trouble in the first limited him to just eight minutes. Lumpkins also scored 22, connecting on 8-of-12 shots from the field while matching his career-high with 15 rebounds. Troy Brewer added 15 points in the winning effort as Nick Hendra tallied 11.

After a sluggish start, American (4-0) came alive with a pair of Brewer and Moldoveanu three-pointers. Hendra converted a conventional three-point play on the ensuing possession to make it a 9-0 run and give the Eagles a 13-6 advantage. Brewer later gave American a 12-point edge with his second triple of the day, 20-8.

FAU (3-2) cut its deficit to eight with four straight points from the line. Hendra ended the run with a driving lay-in before Brewer's third triple made it a 36-22 game. The Eagles closed out the half with a 7-1 run, taking a 47-30 lead into the locker room.

American shot 55.2 percent (16-29) in the first 20 minutes and was 7-of-11 from three. The Eagles limited FAU to just 21.4 percent (6-28) shooting at the defensive end and outrebounded the Owls 20-17. Brewer led all scorers with 14 points, shooting a perfect 5-of-5 from the field and 4-of-4 from beyond the arc. Lumpkins added 11 points and eight rebounds while Hendra chipped in nine points.

Moldoveanu scored the first five points of the second half to push American's lead to 52-30. FAU responded with an 11-2 stretch that included seven points from sophomore Kore White, cutting its deficit to 56-42. A second 11-2 run put the Owls within four and after back-to-back Greg Gantt three's American's advantage stood at 62-57 with 7:48 to play.

After an Alex Tucker basket made it a one-point game, American answered back with four straight points from Lumpkins and Moldoveanu to move the score to 73-68. American iced the game with five free throws in the final minute to hold on for the 82-72 victory.

The Eagles finished the game shooting a season-high 50.9 percent (28-55) from the floor and 41.2 percent (7-17) from three. FAU was limited to just 31.1 percent (19-61) put made 29-of-36 free throws to remain in the game. American held a 38-22 advantage in the paint but was outrebounded by a margin of 41-38.

American will return to action on Tuesday, November 23 at 7:00 p.m. when they travel across town to take on Howard at Burr Gymnasium.
