Senior Christine Fingerhuth has been named
the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year, becoming just the
third student-athlete in the conference's history to earn the
award in back-to-back seasons. In addition, Head Coach Steve Jennings, was named the
conference's Coach of the Year for a seventh time Tuesday
while eight Eagles were named to the All-League teams.
Fingerhuth leads the Patriot League with a career-high 15 goals
and 32 points, and was unanimously voted as the Player of the Year.
She was named the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week a
conference-record four straight times from September 27 –
October 18, scoring 12 goals during an eight-match stretch.
Fingerhuth has scored eight of her 15 goals against conference
opponents this season, and currently ranks 22nd in the NCAA in
goals per game (0.83) and 39th in points per game (1.78). Along
with being named the Offensive Player of the Year, Fingerhuth has
also been named to the All-Patriot League First Team for a third
consecutive season.
Fingerhuth is now just the third Patriot League student-athlete to
repeat as the Offensive Player of the Year and the first to do so
since alumnae Camila Infante '07 accomplished the feat in
2004 and 2005. Fingerhuth is currently tied with Infante for fourth
place in program history with 49 career goals, and ranks fifth
all-time in the conference. Her 110 career points place her seventh
in both program history and League annals.
Jennings has earned his seventh Patriot League Coach of the Year
honor and sixth in a row after guiding No. 9 American to a 15-3
overall record and a 5-0 conference mark. The Eagles captured their
eighth straight Patriot League Regular Season Championship last
weekend and finished with an undefeated record in conference play
for the seventh time in the last eight years. Jennings'
Eagles currently rank fourth in the country in win percentage
(.833), fifth in goals against average (1.06), and are sixth in
both scoring average (3.44) and scoring margin (+2.39). Earlier
this season American enjoyed a 12-match win streak, the
team's third longest win streak under Jennings, in which they
outscored their opponents by a margin of 46-10 and picked up five
shutouts. The Eagles defeated five ranked opponents throughout the
year, including a 3-2 win at then No. 4 Princeton on October 3, and
have been ranked as high as No. 7 in the coaches poll.
The Patriot League also announced its All-League Teams on Tuesday,
to which eight Eagles were named. Joining Fingerhuth on the first
team are classmates Kirstin Gebhart and Anne van Erp, and sophomore Gina Hofmann. Gebhart has recorded one
goal, 12 assists and 14 points this season, with her 12 helpers
ranking 10th on the school's single-season assists list. This
is Gebhart's first All-Patriot League First Team selection,
after twice having been a second team honoree. Van Erp was named to
the first team for a second straight year and is a three-time
All-Patriot League selection. The midfielder has notched a
career-high six goals, four assists and 16 points this season, and
was named the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week on August
30. Hofmann earned her first All-Patriot League selection after
being named Defensive Player of the Week three times and recording
seven goals, 10 assists and 24 points. Fingerhuth, van Erp and
Hofmann were each unanimously selected to the first team.
Tatum Dyer, Shelly Montgomery, Constanza Palma, and Lotte van de Mierop were named to the
All-Patriot League Second Team. Dyer, a three-time second team
selection, has anchored the American defense which currently ranks
fifth in the NCAA in goals against average (1.06). She was twice
named the conference's Defensive Player of the Week and has
totaled two defensive saves on the year. Montgomery and van de
Mierop each rank seventh in the conference with eight goals and
eighth with 18 points. Montgomery was honored as the Offensive
Player of the Week on September 20 and was also named the Rookie of
the Week on October 25. Van de Mierop, meanwhile, was twice
recognized as Rookie of the Week. Palma has notched one goal, four
assists and six points, and was named Rookie of the Week on
September 13.
American's four selections to the first team are the most in
program history, while the eight total All-Patriot League
selections match the program record set in 2008.
