Box Score Sophomore Alassane
Kane converted his Patriot League-leading sixth goal
of the season on a tremoundous individual effort, which came in the
101st minute of action, to push the American University men's
soccer team to a 2-1 double overtime victory over Lafayette
Saturday night in Easton, Pa. The victory gives the Eagles a 3-0
record in Patriot League play for the second straight year, as AU
remains in a first-place tie in the conference standings.
American (6-5, 3-0 Patriot League) took a 1-0 lead in the match
on Seth
Goldman's second score of the season. In the 49th
minute, Goldman was able to win the cross off a Jamie
Davin free kick, as Goldman's header found the back of
the net. For Davin, the assist was his sixth of 2010, which
currently leads the Patriot League in helpers.
Lafayette (5-4-2, 1-2 PL) bounced back with the equalizer in the
67th minute off the foot of Blake Fink. Following the Leopards'
score, neither side was able to find the game-winner in the final
minutes of regulation, forcing the match into extra time.
In the first 10-minute overtime session, each team registered
one corner kick and one shot, although the score remained tied at
one. After 100 minutes of play, the match headed to a second
overtime period, where only 39 seconds in, Kane struck off a pass
from Ryan
Morales to give the Eagles the dramatic 2-1 victory.
On the play, Morales threaded a long pass down the left side of the
field to a streaking Kane, who made a remarkable one-on-one move on
a Lafayette defender to get room, where he was able to fire a
tough-angled shot past Lafayette goalkeeper Andrew Pianko.
Goalkeeper Matt
Makowski made six saves in net for AU, allowing the
lone goal en route to his sixth victory of the season. Makowski was
aided by his defensive unit, especially Goldman who, in addition to
scoring AU's first goal, made a key defensive save on the goal line
on a 21st minute shot by Wayne Maminski shot to keep the match
scoreless.
Additionally, the Eagles held a 10-3 advantage in corner kicks
in the match, including a commanding 7-0 margin in the first
half.
"I am happy for our guys that we were able to battle for a tough
road win," remarked Head Coach Todd West. "All of our matches with
Lafayette turn into one-goal nail-biters. From Makowski to our back
four, along with the midfielders and forwards, it was a great team
defensive effort. Alassane came up with a huge goal in OT to
deliver a great conference road win."
Saturday's match was the fifth straight meeting that American
and Lafayette have needed extra time. With the win, AU has now won
each of the last two seasons in double overtime, and prior to that,
the previous three contests resulted in 2OT draws.
The triumph improves American's record to a perfect 3-0 in
Patriot League play, which marks the second straight year and
fourth time since joining the conference in 2001 that the Eagles
have been perfect in the PL through three matches. The Eagles are
currently tied with Colgate with nine points atop the conference
standings.
The Eagles will return to action on Tuesday, October 12 when
they battle non-conference foe Pennsylvania. Match time from
Philadelphia, Pa., is scheduled for 7 p.m. AU's next Patriot League
contest will be next Saturday, October 16 against Navy at Reeves
Field.
