Box Score Colin Seigfried and Alassane
Kane each scored for the American University men's
soccer team, but it was not enough in a 3-2 loss to Georgetown on
Wednesday afternoon at Reeves Field.
Georgetown (5-5-1) came out in the first half on the attack, as
a 10th minute score by Jose Colchao gave the Hoyas a 1-0 advantage.
Georgetown continued to pressure the Eagles' defense over the next
few minutes, as AU goalkeeper Matt
Makowski made back-to-back saves on close range
opportunities by Jimmy Nealis and Chandler Diggs. Later in the
half, the Hoyas appeared to have a golden chance to make the score
2-0 when Seth C'deBaca had a breakaway into the AU goal box. But
American defender Cristobal
Soto tracked down C'deBaca from behind, and his
slidetack poked the ball away to fend off the Georgetown
chance.
In the 31st minute, the Hoyas took a 2-0 lead when Steve Neumann
knocked home a deflection off a cross. Less than two minutes later,
Georgetown nearly made the score 3-0 on an Ian Christianson
point-blank shot. Makowski, however, was there for American (5-5)
to make the key save.
Facing a 2-0 deficit, American (5-5) dug in and swung the
momentum in the match late in the first half, creating
opportunities in the offensive end. The Eagles were able to trim
the Georgetown lead in half when Seigfried converted his
first-career goal. Off a set piece, Patrick
Mehlert served a cross in front of the Georgetown goal
where David
Menzie got a touch on it, feeding a pass to Seigfried
for the close-range shot.

The score remained 2-1 into halftime, although the Eagles
knotted the score at two with Kane's score in the 62nd minute. The
play was setup when Jamie
Davin's shot bounced off the right post, and came out
in front of the goal. Kane was the first one to the ball, and put
in the easy score to draw the Eagles' even. For Kane, the score was
his Patriot League-leading fifth of the season.
The Eagles nearly took the lead in the 78th minute when a
streaking Jack
Scott received a pass in the open field on his way
toward the Georgetown goal. But Hoyas goalkeeper Matthew Brutto
came out to make a fantastic save on Scott's shot to keep the score
at 2-2.
After back-and-forth action, Georgetown's Neumann recorded his
second goal of the match in the 85th minute in what was the
game-winner. Neumann received a cross from the left side from Andy
Reimer, and headed his shot past Makowski to give the Hoyas the 3-2
road victory.
"It's frustrating to fight that hard to get back into a game and
give up a late goal," Head Coach Todd West said following the match.
"We did a lot of reactive things today and it put us on the wrong
foot. Give them [Georgetown] credit, but our energy and effort was
poor for the most part today, and that's something we need to
improve."
American actually outshot Georgetown in the match by a 18-14
margin, although the Hoyas held a 9-8 advantage in shots on goal.
AU earned seven corners compared to five for Georgetown.
The Eagles will look to improve to 3-0 in Patriot League play
when they visit Lafayette on Saturday, October 9. Game time from
Easton, Pa., is slated for 7 p.m.
