Box Score The No. 9 American University field hockey team notched its
12th straight win Sunday with a 2-0 victory at No. 18
Albany. Hannah
Weitzman recorded eight saves en route to her fourth
shutout of the season, while Gina
Hofmann and Natalie
Ellenberger provided the offense for the Eagles.
American would waste no time getting the scoring underway, as
Hofmann converted the Eagles first penalty corner on a direct shot
from the top of the shell, with assists being credited to
Ellenberger and Kirstin
Gebhart.
The score would remain 1-0 until the 17th minute when
Ellenberger beat Albany goalkeeper Christine Hoffman off of a
penalty corner to extend American's lead to 2-0.
Ellenberger inserted the ball to Gebhart, who then sent it to
Constanza
Palma; Ellenberger then snuck behind the Great Danes
defense where she deflected Palma's shot into the cage for her
third goal of the year.
From there, Weitzman and the American defense took over the
match keeping Albany off the board. The Great Danes started
the second half with a flurry of shots on cage, but Weitzman was up
to the task making three saves in a nine second span. The
Eagles defense would continue to deny Albany, shutting down five
corner opportunities in a 6:24 spurt early in the
half.
Albany outshot the Eagles 12-5 on the afternoon and earned 11
penalty corners to American's three. Weitzman finished the
afternoon with eight saves to pickup her 13th win on the year and
fourth shutout.
The win was American's 12th in a row, now one shy of the second
longest win streak under Head Coach Steve Jennings. The Eagles
posted a record 17 consecutive wins in the 2004 season, leading to
a 19-3 overall record and elite eight appearance. American
has now outscored its opponents 46-10 during its current winning
steak, including five wins over top-20 opponents and five
shutouts.
The Eagles next are in action Wednesday, October 20 as they
travel to College Park, Md., to take on No. 2 Maryland at 7:00
p.m. Fans unable to make the match can follow the action via
