Men's Soccer Earns Chances But Settles for Scoreless 2OT Draw With Navy; Watch Highlights

Box Score

The American University men's soccer team had several potential game-winning opportunities throughout the 110 minutes of play Saturday afternoon against Navy, but was unable to capitalize in a scoreless double overtime draw at Reeves Field.

With the tie, American (6-6-1, 3-0-1 Patriot League) remains unbeaten through four matches of conference play. This is the fourth straight season the Eagles have not lost in their opening four matches of Patriot League play, and fifth time overall since joining the conference in 2001.

The best scoring chance in the match for either team was off the foot of American's Mike Worden, which came in the first overtime session when his shot from 20 yards out on the left side came clipped the right post, denying him his first game-winner of the season.

Navy (6-2-3, 1-1-2 PL) had its best offensive opportunity of the match in the 78th minute on a deflection in front of the goal that appeared to be heading toward the back of the net. But American defender Michael Roberts was able to make the sliding defensive save on the goal line to preserve the shutout.

In the second overtime session, AU outshot Navy, 4-1, although each team had one legitimate chance to put the match away. For American, in the 101st minute, Jack Scott received a pass in the open field and put a shot on goal, which was handled by Navy goalkeeper Aaron Depere. On the other side, the Midshipmen earned their opportunity when Dave Arnold fired a shot on goal from about 25 yards straight-on, which was saved by AU goalkeeper Matt Makowski.

The Eagles outshot Navy, 21-15, in the match, including a 10-6 advantage in shots on goal. Additionally, AU earned six corner kicks, which included several near-misses throughout the match. Navy, on the flip side, had three corners in the match.

Makowski made five saves in net for the Eagles to pick up his third shutout of the season, which lowered his goals against average to 1.13 for the season. He was aided by his defensive unit throughout the 110 minutes, led by Roberts, Cristobal Soto, Seth Goldman and company.

"We created some 1-v-1s and some opportunities, and arguably if we're a little sharper in the 18 or around the attacking third, I think we could have found a win today," Head Coach Todd West said following the match. "The focus was trying to keep Navy to zero. We said we have a chance to win if we do that, and at least we accomplished that goal. Now we have to try to do that again, and see if we can find a goal next weekend [against Lehigh on Saturday]."

The Eagles will have a week off until their next Patriot League match on Saturday, October 23 in Bethlehem, Pa., against Lehigh. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
