Box Score The American University men's soccer team travelled to
Philadelphia, Pa., on Tuesday night to take on No. 17 Pennsylvania
in a non-conference contest, where the Eagles came up on the short
end of a 1-0 double overtime decision.
The difference in the match was a 107th minute goal by Penn's
Michael Kozak, his first score of the season. The play was setup
off a shot by Loukas Tasigianis moments before, which was saved by
American goalkeeper Billy
Knutsen. But Kozak's rebound got by Knutsen for the
game-winner.
Knutsen, a freshman from San Francisco, Calif., made seven saves
in goal for American (6-6, 3-0 Patriot League) in his collegiate
debut.
Through regulation, the match was nearly even on the stat sheet,
as each squad had recorded six shots in the first 90 minutes. But
Penn (9-2, 2-0 Ivy League) took control in the extra time, firing
eight total shots compared to only two for the Eagles. Knutsen made
four saves in the six-plus minutes the double overtime session
before surrendering the Kozak goal.
Nick
Kapus led the Eagles with three shots in the match
while five other Eagles registered one shot apiece.
Ben Berg made four saves in net for Penn, which is currently
ranked 17th in the NSCAA national poll.
"It was a great team effort tonight," Head Coach Todd West commented. "I am proud of
Billy
Knutsen, Patrick Mehlert, and Tyler
Collins, who made their first college starts.
Mark
Wysocki was also very good in central midfield. At
worst I thought we would have left with a 0-0 draw; however, one
mistake near the end of the second OT cost us. We will stew
on this for 24 hours, and then put it behind us and get ready for
Navy on Saturday."
The Eagles will return to action this Saturday, October 16 when
they host Navy in a Patriot League matchup. The action from Reeves
Field will culminate at 1 p.m., and it can be watched live on Eagles Vision
TV, part of AUeagles.com.
