Box Score The American University women's soccer team visited Patriot
League leader Army on Sunday afternoon, and came away with a
double-overtime 0-0 draw. Lindsey
Farthing played all 110 minutes in goal for AU,
earning her second shutout in as many games, and third overall in
2010.
In a defensive struggle, legitimate offensive opportunities came
few and far between for both sides through regulation. For American
(5-9-1, 1-1-1 Patriot League), its best chance in the first 90
minutes came in the 10th minute of play when Brooke
Sheppard fired a close-range shot wide of the
goal.
In the first 10-minute sudden victory overtime session,
American's Shaena
Alfonsi put a header on goal, although Army goalkeeper
Alex Lostetter made the save. Army (11-3-1, 2-0-1 PL) fired two
shots toward Farthing in the first overtime, although neither shot
was on target.
The Black Knights applied the pressure on AU in the second
overtime period, earning three corner kicks and firing three shots.
The best opportunity of the entire match came in the final seconds
of the second overtime when Army's Julia Stallard fired a rocket at
Farthing, who was up to the challenge as she reached up and knocked
it over the crossbar to preserve the 0-0 draw.
Farthing made five saves in net to earn the shutout. The senior
has now not allowed a goal in her last 276:11 in net dating back to
Monday's 2-1 2OT win over Princeton.
The tie marks the Eagles' first draw in their last 37 matches.
AU's last tie also occurred at Army back on October 26, 2008.
Additionally, Sunday's draw marks the fifth time in the last seven
meetings against the Black Knights that the match has finished
tied.
"We really had to dig deep and battle to come away with the
tie," commented Head Coach Dave Bucciero. "It was a gutty
performance today, and as a coach, that's all you can ask for. It
was an important point on the road and now we have to get ready for
a good Colgate team this weekend."
The Eagles will return home for their next three Patriot League
contests, beginning next Sunday, October 17 when they welcome
Colgate to Reeves Field for a Patriot League Championship Game
rematch. First kick is slated for 12 p.m., and it will be broadcast
live on Eagles Vision TV, part of
AUeagles.com.
