Men's Basketball Hosts Holy Cross in Annual 'Phil Bender' Game

The American University men's basketball team will open a two-game homestand on Saturday, January 23, as it hosts Holy Cross in the team's annual "Phil Bender" game live on RCN Cable. Tipoff from Bender Arena is schedule for 2:00 p.m. American is 7-15 all-time against Holy Cross but has won two straight against the Crusaders and four of the last five meetings.

Head Coach Jeff Jones recorded his 299th career win last Sunday over Colgate and with the Eagles next victory will eclipse the 300 win plateau. Jones became American's all-time winningest coach last season and has amassed 153 victories as an Eagle.

American is looking to bounce back from a 68-48 loss on Wednesday at Army. The Black Knights shot 54.0 percent from the floor and 50.0 percent from three in the victory and forced American into committing 19 turnovers. Junior Vlad Moldoveanu led the Eagles in scoring, notching 22 points on 9-of-16 shooting and added four rebounds and one assist.

Moldoveanu has paced the Eagles in scoring since becoming eligible for competition at DePaul on December 16. The junior is averaging 18.5 ppg while shooting 47.8 percent from the field and 42.4 percent from three. Sophomore Stephen Lumpkins ranks third in the Patriot League in rebounding and second in blocked shots, registering 7.6 rpg and 1.7 bpg, and has added 11.4 ppg. Junior Nick Hendra is third on the team in scoring at 9.9 ppg with 5.7 rpg and a team-best 35 three-point field goals.
