The American University volleyball team was defeated by New
Mexico Friday night, 3-0, in the team's second match at the
University of Portland Classic.
New Mexico (4-0) earned the victory by set scores of 25-15,
26-24 and 26-24. The Lobos opened the first set by taking a 10-5
lead and later extended their advantage to 21-14. American (0-5)
turned in a solid defensive performance, recording four blocks and
forcing six errors, but could not keep pace offensively as New
Mexico took the frame, 25-15.
After falling behind 7-1 to begin the second, American used a
5-0 run to even the score at nine. The Eagles battled back from a
second deficit, 13-9, before taking their first lead of the set,
15-14. American held a 23-20 advantage late but could not hold on
as the Lobos used a 4-0 run to steal the set, 26-24.
The two teams played evenly early in the third set, trading the
lead back-and-forth. Tied at 13, the Lobos embarked on a 4-0 run to
take a 17-13 edge. The Eagles charged back though to tie the score
at 24 before New Mexico scored consecutive points to earn match
point.
American was led on the offensive side of the net by Cassandra
Ricketts and Magdalena
Tekiel who each recorded 10 kills. Tekiel added three total
blocks defensively as Ann Recht
chipped in four total blocks and five kills. Rebecca
Heath notched 15 digs and Krysta
Cicala dished out 32 assists.
The Eagles will wrap-up play in the University of Portland
Classic Saturday night against the host Portland Pilots. Match time
