The American University volleyball team fell in its first match
of the University of Portland Classic to Portland on Thursday, 3-1.

Waterman recorded the first double-double of her career in the
loss, registering 16 kills and 17 digs.
Portland (2-3) took the match by set scores of 25-27, 25-23,
25-15 and 25-22. American built a 10-6 lead early in the first set
with four different Eagles recording kills. Portland battled back
to tie the score and held a 24-23 advantage with the serve for set
point. Back-to-back kills by Waterman and Cassandra
Rickets put American back in the lead though and the Pilot's
eighth error of the frame gave the Eagles the victory, 27-25.
American fell behind early in the second set, 10-5, but came
back to tie the score at 12 following a Claire
Recht service ace and Magdalena
Tekiel kill. Portland regained the lead late in the set though
before escaping with a 25-23 win. The Pilots continued the momentum
gained late in the second set into the third set en route to a
25-15 victory.
The Eagles used a 5-0 run to jump out to a 10-7 lead to begin
the fourth set before Portland answered back with a run of its own
to take a 17-13 advantage. American brought the score back to
within one, 23-22, after forcing consecutive Pilot errors but could
not hold off the home team as Portland earned the set and match
with a 25-22 win.
Waterman led all Eagles in scoring with 16 kills, three total
blocks and one ace. She also notched 17 digs to record her first
career double-double. Tekiel registered 13 kills and Ricketts added
10 kils and seven digs. Rebecca
Heath tallied 11 digs.
American will return to action on Friday, Sept. 4, against New
Mexico in the team's second match of the University of Portland
