The 23rd-ranked American University men's soccer team
travelled to West Long Branch, N.J., on Sunday afternoon, and was
defeated by Monmouth by a final score of 3-0.
Monmouth (5-0), which is currently ranked 24th in the
NSCAA/adidas national rankings, got off to a fast start with three
first half goals to put American (2-2) in an early hole. Monmouth's
first goal, which was credited to Ryan Clark, came less than a
minute into the match. In the seventh minute, Monmouth's Ryan Kinne
gave the Hawks a 2-0 lead. The third goal of the first half came
just before halftime, George Caiella gave Monmouth a 3-0 advantage,
a margin that remain unchanged for the rest of the match.
The Eagles were outshot 10-8 in the match, and Monmouth held a
slight 5-4 advantage in shots on goal. Junior Nick
Kapus led American with two shots on goal.
"Until we learn how to consistently prepare for matches, we are
going to get inconsistent performances," commented American Head
Coach Todd West.
"Monmouth is a very good college soccer team and at some point we
hope to become a good college soccer team. We were outworked today,
but this team will bounce back and leaders will emerge."
The Eagles will be back in action on next Saturday, September 19
with a 1 p.m. home match versus William & Mary. The match can
