Volleyball Outdueled by Yale, 3-1, in the American Volleyball Classic

The American University volleyball team fell to Yale on Friday, 3-1, in the team's first match of the American Volleyball Classic in Bender Arena. The Eagles opened the match with a win in the first set but could not continue their momentum throughout the remainder of the match.

American's (1-6) defense propelled the Eagles to a victory in the first set, recording two blocks while forcing seven Bulldog errors. American earned an 8-5 advantage early in the frame and after a Claire Recht and Angelina Waterman block led by a score of 15-11. Yale battled back to take the lead late, 20-18, but the Eagles prevailed on the strength of a 7-1 run to take the set, 25-21.

The second set was a back-and-forth affair which saw three lead changes and 12 ties. It was Yale who struck first, taking a quick 2-0 lead, but American answered back and traded points with the Bulldogs, taking a 19-19 tie into the stretch. Yale pulled away at the end of the set however, scoring six straight points to earn the 25-19 victory.

After trailing Yale by just a few points early in the second set, American fell off the pace as the Bulldogs opened a 21-14 lead. Yale used an 8-1 run to gain the advantage before earning set point, 25-16. It was more of the same in the fourth set as a 13-0 run midway through the frame propelled Yale to set and match point, 25-15.

American's offensive and defensive attacks were lead by Waterman who recorded a team-high 11 kills and a match-high six total blocks, including three solo. Recht chipped in nine kills and Cassandra Ricketts added eight. Krysta Cicala tallied 32 assists while Rebecca Heath dug 14 balls.

The Eagles will be back in action Saturday, Sept. 12, with two matches to close out the American Volleyball Classic. American will first face NJIT at 1 p.m. and will close out the tournament against Virginia Tech in the nightcap at 7 p.m. Both matches can be seen live on the new Eagles Vision TV channel, featuring multiple camera angles, a live scoreboard and analysis from studio and courtside broadcast teams.
