The American University men's soccer team travelled to the
University of Richmond for its second and final exhibition game
Tuesday evening, and came up on the short end of a 1-0 decision.
The Eagles lone goal allowed came in the fourth minute of action
on an own-goal. The Spiders' Jed Antoun was credited with the
tally.
American outshot Richmond 19-7 in the match, including 9-2 in
the second half, although the Eagles couldn't push a game-tying
goal past Richmond's goalkeeper, Brock Tomlinson. Junior Nick Kapus and senior
Nidhal
Charfi each recorded four shots for AU. Kapus was responsible
for three of American's eight shots on goal.
Senior Ryan
Leonard played all 90 minutes in net for the Eagles, allowing
only one goal and recording three saves.
"Tonight, we were able to get a lot of guys opportunities
against a good team, so that was a positive," said American Head
Coach Todd
West. "We have the next seven days to get ourselves mentally
and physically prepared to play two challenging games in the D.C.
College Cup. We're looking forward to getting the season underway."
American's regular season opener will be next Wednesday,
September 2, in the D.C. College Cup versus local-rival George
Washington. The match will be played on the campus of George Mason
in Fairfax, Va. First kick is scheduled for 5 p.m.
