WASHINGTON - The American University men's and women's track and field teams began competition at the 2009 Patriot League Indoor Track and Field Championships Saturday on the campus of the U.S. Naval Academy. Senior Carlos Jamieson won the 5000 meter run for the second straight year and helped the men's 4x800 meter relay team to a fourth-place finish. Rachel Forcino posted AU's best finish on the women's side, placing ninth in the 5000 in the school's fourth fastest time.
Jamieson was the only Eagle on the men's side to compete in an individual event on Saturday. Jamieson entered the 5000 seeded seventh but outraced his competition en route to his second-consecutive PL Championship in the event. Jamieson finished with a personal best time of 14:25.84, just edging out Army's John Anderson who finished second in 14:25.91. The senior's time eclipsed the IC4A qualifying standard for the event and is the second fastest time in school history.
Jamieson returned to the track later in the day and helped the men's 4x800 team to a fourth-place finish. The team of Dan King, Alex Hula, Jamieson and Conor Sullivan finished in 7:38.54 and also eclipsed the IC4A standard. The Eagles time is the sixth fastest in school history.
Forcino was the top finisher on the women's side as she placed ninth in the women's 5000. Forcino completed the race in 17:57.52 and moved into fourth place on AU's all-time top 10 list.
Competition at the 2009 PL Indoor Track and Field Championships began yesterday with the men's and women's heptathlon but no Eagle competed on the first day. After the second day of competition the men's team sits in fifth place while the women's team is in eighth.
