Colgate's Monica Jensen scored a sudden death, game-winning goal in double overtime of the Patriot League Championship Game to give the Raiders a 1-0 victory over the American University women's soccer team. The heartbreaking loss for the Eagles puts an end to their season after coming so close to only their second conference title in program history.
In the 108th minute of a scoreless match, Jensen proved to be the hero with her first goal of the season. Her shot from 20 yards out snuck by AU goalkeeper Arianna Efstathiou into the corner of the net, igniting a wild celebration at Colgate's Van Doren Field in Hamilton, N.Y.
Both teams had opportunities to win the game during regulation time and throughout the overtime periods. For American (11-9, 5-2 PL), with just over 18 minutes remaining in the second half, freshman Kristin Piorun hit the crossbar on a shot. Senior Kelsey Brasher recorded one shot in each overtime period, including a shot midway through the second overtime session that was on goal and required a save by Colgate goalkeeper Ashley Walsh.
Before converting the game-winner, Colgate (11-6-3, 5-1-1 PL) had its best chance to win the match with about six minutes remaining in regulation time. Colgate's Jillian Kinter drew Efstathiou out of the goal area, leaving an open net for a moment, but was unable to fire a shot on goal quickly enough before the American goalkeeper recovered.
Overall, it was an evenly-played match, as Colgate held a slight 11-8 advantage in shots with both teams firing four shots on goal. Brasher led the Eagles with seven shots, two of which were on target.
Efstathiou was solid as usual in net for American, recording three saves in the 107-plus minutes of action. The sophomore finishes the season with a 0.85 goals against average, the second lowest single-season GAA in program history.
AU's seven-member senior class concludes their career in Washington, D.C., with a 35-33-9 record, including a 14-7-7 mark in PL play. Individually, Erin Koch and Kelly McLaughlin each played in 77 matches over their four years, which ties them for the most appearances in school history. Additionally, Brasher completes her career with 26 goals and 63 points, good for fourth and fifth in program history, respectively.
