The American University men's and women's swimming and diving
teams defeated Howard in a dual meet on Friday afternoon at Reeves
Aquatic Complex. The Eagles' men's squad edged Howard, 107-86,
while the women's team beat the Bison, 106-56.
The AU men's team won nine of the 12 events, with senior
Matt
Pelletier and freshman Ming Ong
winning two events apiece. Pelletier won the 50 free (21.75) and
200 back (1:55.45), while Ong was victorious in the 500 free
(4:56.69) and 200 breast (2:15.46). Additionally, sophomore
Sean
McNamara and freshman Michael
Greenberg won their first ever collegiate races in the
100 free (48.86) and 200 free (1:48.40), respectively. Finally,
junior Rick
Driscoll won the 200 butterfly in a time of 2:06.06.
On the women's side, the Eagles were victorious in 10 of 12
events, as Eleanor
Clay, Alexandra
Wessel and Anna
Gooding each won two events. Clay, a junior, was
victorious in the 200 breast (2:27.19) and 200 IM (2:14.39). The
sophomore Wessel took home the titles in both the 100 free (53.55)
and 200 free (1:55.10), while classmate Gooding won the 500 free
(5:22.27) and 1000 free (10:59.52). Freshman Jamie
Tkach won her first ever collegiate race in the 200
fly in a time of 2:22.13. Veterans Dory
Isaacs andJess
Balance were victorious in the 50 free (24.88) and 200
back (2:15.33), respectively.
In the diving competition, Brian
McCallister and Cynthia
Galston both earned career-highs in the one-meter
event. McCallister scored 206.25, while Galston recorded 170.85
points. Junior Kelsey
Monarch and freshman James
Fleming also participated, earning 172.20 and 137.85
points, respectively.
The swimming and diving team will be back in action on Saturday,
November 7 as the squad travels to Annapolis, Md., to take on Navy,
Bucknell and Lafayette. The meet will begin at 12 p.m.
